The La Cañada wrestling team started their match against South Pasadena HS at a great disadvantage: many of their wrestlers were ill. They got off to a good start with David Alvarez, winning his match with a 3rd period pin, but the next two wrestlers lost. David Wyatt changed the momentum by pinning his opponent in the 1st period, but because of illnesses of team members, first-year wrestlers wrestled the next three matches and the Tigers were able to rack up the points. Chris Bache, also a first-year wrestler, out maneuvered his opponent and pinned him in the second period.

Though the Rio Hondo League Tournament title was a close one, the La Cañada wrestling team was in for a doozy when they faced off in the CIF Central Division Preliminaries, known as one of the toughest divisions as judged by returning CIF wrestlers in each weight class. Last Friday, that’s exactly what the Spartans had to overcome at John Glenn High School in Norwalk, and with more than 40 high schools represented, LCHS wrestlers had secured nine berths. These grapplers were Rasheed Akbarut, Chris Bache, James Christensen, Sean Denney, Joe Hughes, David Miller, Luke Sanborn, Brain Streeter and David Wyatt.
