The La Cañada High freshman football team suffered a tough 28-8 loss to the Arleta Mustangs last Friday. The Mustangs' combo freshman-sophomore team held the Spartans offense to a single touchdown. Offensive highlights included 95 total yards for Omar Rady, 46 yards for David Miller, including a TD, and 130 yards passing for Jeff Grigg. Linemen Austin Roye, Chris Gilbert and linebacker Michael Thomas assisted in holding the Mustangs scoreless in the last quarter, in fact, the Spartans won the last half of the game.

La Cañada did their best on Thursday night but a strong throwing game by Crescenta Valley and an offense that struggled to put together yards downed the Spartans, 39-7, on Moyne Field at Glendale College. The Spartans weren't able to get their offense going until late in the game, with quarterbacks Duke McCaffrey and Dale Robbins going 0-for-6 with an interception on their first six pass attempts.  Late in the game, Robbins connected on two passes, finishing the game 2-for-5 with 52 yards.

The La Cañada High freshman football team defeated the Temple City Rams, 32-3, at home last Friday. In the first half of the game, the Spartans scored a touchdown with each possession. The TDs included two pass receptions by Dodge Williams, running TDs by Omar Rady and Jonathan Sparks and a quarterback sneak by Jeff Grigg. Contributing to the 280 impressive yards on the ground were running backs David Miller, Jamie Dick, Sparks, Ryan Shurie and Billy Platissa. Rady continues to excel with 138 all purpose yards.

Monrovia trumps La Cañada on track La Cañada lost to Monrovia in their first league meet of the year on Thursday, the boys’ side losing 69-57 and the girls’ side losing 68-59. It was the Spartans’ first league meet of the year. Brent Johnson took first place in the 110-meter high hurdles (15.67 seconds) and the 300 low hurdles (42.62). In shotput, both David Miller and Shannon Denney won the event. Miller threw a 38 feet, 8 inches. Denney reached 33-4.

The LCHS Freshman football team stepped it up last Friday in South Pasadena with an overwhelming 30-0 Rio Hondo League victory over the Tigers. The Spartans' running game led the offense with a total of 295 yards, including 145 for Omar Rady, 78 for Jamie Dick and 72 for Josh Hanson. Other ball carriers were Adam Overgaard, Christian Porter and Patrick Hobart. Thirteen Spartans carried the ball with a combined 417 yards of offense Rady had two touchdowns and Jonathan Sparks and Dick one each for La Cañada.

The La Cañada High freshman football team has started off this year with a bang. Since the season opener 13-12 loss to Crescenta Valley, the freshmen have been victorious over Glendale (33-0), San Gabriel Gabrielino (28-8) and an exciting 21-16 win last Friday over Rosemead Don Bosco to improve to 3-1. Against Don Bosco, quarterback Jeff Grigg had a great game with 243 passing yards. Receiver and free safety Dodge Williams was the star of the game. Williams, leading both the Spartans' offense and defense, made 221 combined (receiving/running)

The La Cañada High freshman football team dominated host San Marino last Friday with a decisive 20-7 season finale victory over the Titans. The Spartans' offense gained 298 yards, including 170 yards passing by quarterback Jeff Grigg and 128 yards rushing by Omar Rady, Jonathan Sparks and Ben Drake. Receiver Josh Hanson caught passes for a total of 86 yards. Ryan Kaul, Kevin Kim and Kyle Mickelson assisted on offense. Brent Johnson lead the Spartans' defense with six-and-a-half tackles, with four-and-a-half for Michael Chung and three-and-a-half for Jamie Dick and Michael Knopf.

Portantino on the campaign trail Assemblyman Anthony Portantino (D-La Cañada Flintridge) is on the campaign trail for what will be his final term. He will be termed out of office in 2012. Three other candidates have begun the nomination process, two Republicans and a Libertarian. Running for the GOP are Brian Fuller, whom Portantino defeated two years ago, and Arcadia resident Alvaro Day. The third candidate is Libertarian Eytan Kollin of Pasadena. Congressman David Dreier, who at 57 has served 29 years in Congress, is a candidate for re-election.
