A male suspect on Monday entered a Bank of America branch in La Cañada Flintridge, slipped a teller a threatening note and walked away with $14,000 in cash, authorities said. Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies continue to search for the suspect, described as Hispanic, 5 feet 10 inches to 6 feet tall and in his late 20s or early 30s. He was of medium build with dark hair and dark eyes. At the time of the robbery he was wearing black pants and a black shirt, authorities said.

I happened to meet such a woman early one morning last week while driving through a back alley short-cut. She had shoulder length white hair, wore a heavy blue parka and sat on the curb smoking. Her expression seemed to indicate she had no idea where she was or how she'd gotten there, and was mulling over her options.

It was a typical summer night in the 91011. I strolled down Foothill Boulevard with our dog, a rescue black Lab named Miss Audrey Hepburn. “Miss Hepburn,” I said. Audrey looked up expectantly and lifted her ears, as if chocolate might be involved. “No. No chocolate. This is serious.” (Miss Hepburn recently visited the emergency pet clinic because she ate some chocolate bars from the golf tournament. The vet bill was $252. Last summer, she ate an entire chocolate cake and the bill was $265.

Nikolay, Tatiana, and Jennifer are in many ways typical kids. They love to experience new things, they love to share a smile or grin, and they love to be active. But they are not typical kids. Nikolay, Tatiana, and Jennifer are orphans visiting the United States for just five weeks to experience life in a family and to publicize the plight of orphaned children. Sponsored by Kidsave, a non-profit organization that works towards solutions to reduce the number of children living in orphanages, these three very special youngsters are visiting La Cañada and La Crescenta this summer, experiencing so much of what this area has to offer.

Molly explained her joy with this experience and urged me to take a look. "We meet at 5:30 a.m.," she said. With the mere mention of boot camp, my palms began to sweat and I started to shake?and that old albatross returned once again to hang on my neck. "Can I do this," I asked? Those words, 'boot camp,' brought me back to my initial experiences in the Marines.
