Beginning at 10 a.m. on April 29, Temple Sinai of Glendale will hold its annual Mitzvah (Good Deed) Day. April 29 is the date Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has declared as Big Sunday, a city-wide day of volunteerism. Hundreds of volunteer opportunities will be taking place throughout the Los Angeles area. Last year, 32,000 people came out to lend a hand to help out 250 charitable organizations. Social Action, or Tikkun Olam, has always been part of Judaism. The Foothill community is invited to join the Temple Sinai congregation — from its youngest members to its oldest — as they participate in this day of volunteerism.

Roughy 100 people gathered at Temple Sinai in Glendale Sunday afternoon for a forum on the recent genocide and atrocities that have taken place in Darfur. The Glendale Interfaith Community Forum on Genocide and Darfur was moderated by Conressman Adam Schiff (D-Glendale). Schiff introduced the three speakers: Father Vazken Movsesian from In His Shoes International, whose grandparents were survivors of the Armenian Genocide, addressed the Armenian Genocide; Robert Geminder, a Jewish Holocaust survivor from Poland; and Mohamed Suleiman, a Darfurian refugee who shared personal stories of survival.

Letters to the Editor All should share the sewer costs The inequitably distribution of the cost of the sewers should be a big issue for the people in District No. 5. This is not the way cities in America work. Our La Cañada model for funding sewers seems to be those who use it pay for it use it. But no other aspect of this or any other American city works like this. Let’s extend the La Cañada model for funding sewers. Suppose a tree falls across the entrance to Soliden Lane.

Outstanding local and international films, including works from USC, UCLA, Art Center and CSUN will be presented at the 11th Annual ARPA International Film Festival Oct. 24-26 at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood. ARPA?s opening night premier will be J. Michael Hagopian?s final installment in his trilogy about the Armenian Genocide, titled ?The River Ran Red.? Other highlights include an exclusive 90th birthday tribute to screen legend Rita Hayworth, featuring the first film that won her international acclaim, Rouben Mamoulian?

Both local congressional members are supporting a call for the United States to give official recognition to the Armenian genocide of 1915. Congressman Adam Schiff of Glendale, who represents a large number of Armenian-Americans in his district, has become the point man in the effort to get official recognition for the deaths which began in 1915, and were blamed on the Ottoman Empire. This year he has a record number of co-sponsors, some 150, including the leader of the Republican delegation from California, David Dreier.

Gallagher to present Tupper Awards in May David Gallagher , deputy director of the Astronomy and Physics Directorate at JPL, will present the annual Les Tupper Community Service Awards on Monday, May 10, in JPL?s von Karman Auditorium. All residents are invited to this annual event sponsored by the La Cañada Flintridge Coordinating Council . Gallagher will also provide an overview of JPL and the projects within the Astronomy and Physics Directorate Prior to his current assignment, Gallagher was project manager for the Space Interferometry Mission, a future program to study planets around other stars using two smaller separated telescopes in space to achieve the capability of a very large diameter telescope.

CNN's chief International correspondent Christiane Amanpour, will be making a rare public speaking appearance in Pasadena as part of the Distinguished Speaker Series. She will be at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium on Wed., Feb. 15, at 8 p.m. Individual tickets to Amanpour are not available. However, Amanpour and the remaining speakers are still available in a subscription package of four speakers for $198. Amanpour has reported live from the most troubled areas around the globe, cementing her reputation as the preeminent international correspondent in war-torn or conflicted regions.

Members of the Don José Verdugo Chapter, National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution, honored five local young women at its annual Good Citizen Award ceremony held recently at the La Cañada Flintridge Country Club. The Good Citizen Award is presented to students for outstanding work they do for home, school, community and country. The students are selected by school faculty committees based on the qualities of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism. The young women, all seniors, represent five local high schools and were selected for this prestigious award.
