Once again La Cañadans have proven themselves to be great supporters of our public schools as was demonstrated over the weekend when the La Cañada Flintridge Educational Foundation held its annual Gala at the beautiful old Pasadena landmark hotel, once known as the Huntington-Sheraton, the Ritz-Carlton and now the Langham Hotel. Sorry to have missed the event, as I heard from our reporter Mary O’Keefe that it was quite spectacular. It was sold out, as usual, which is always an impressive feat in itself.

Flintridge Prep's Lindsay Fletcher and Tom McCullough, two of the last three local high school athletes competing in post season play, were stopped short in their endeavors last Friday. Fletcher failed to qualify for the CIF-State Track and Field Championships in the 100 and 200 meter events at the CIF Southern Section-Toyota Masters Track and Field meet at Cerritos College in Norwalk. Fletcher, competing in Division IV, finished eighth in the 100 with a time of 12.13 and sixth in the 200 with a time of 24.86.

?Third-time?s-the-charm? was the theme for Flintridge Sacred-Heart Academy coming into the CIF Southern Division IA volleyball championship on Nov. 17 at Cypress College. Instead, the Tologs? season came to an end just days after upsetting top-ranked Santa Barbara. Sacred Heart Head Coach Shelli Orlandini said her girls were underdogs all season. The only time they played like one was against Mission League rival the Harvard-Westlake Wolverines, who beat the Tologs in four games in the title match, 24-26, 25-7, 25-21, 25-21, for the program?

So this is what it feels like to go to a championship game. That?s what the girls at Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy are thinking, after a thrilling playoff run last week that included a case of déjà vu and a shot at redemption. For redemtion, the team needs to beat Harvard-Westlake at least once this season; they will have their last chance to do so on Saturday, when the two powerhouses meet in the CIF Southern Section I-A Finals at Cypress College. Yet to get to that big game, the Tologs had to redeem themselves Tuesday night against Santa Barbara, who beat them last year in the same semifinal game.

The five-point lead was death. Whoever got that fifth point won the game. And boy, those fifth points didn?t come easy. There were 16 ties and 12 lead changes in the five-game match. There were diving digs, thunderous spikes and rallies that made a few heads spin. But in the end, La Cañada girls? volleyball narrowly defeated Troy, 18-25, 25-19, 26-24, 13-25, 15-11, at home on Tuesday night to advance to the CIF Southern Section Division 2-A finals for the second time in as many years.
