BABE RUTH DIVISION Cardinals 11, Cubs 6 A grand slam in the bottom of the third by the Cardinals' Scott Gray proved to be the difference in a close game against the Cubs in the rain at the varsity field. For the Cards, Carl Canyon struck out two and pitched himself out of a jam in the second inning. He also helped his cause by leading off the game with a double, walking twice and scoring three runs. Jack Paton struck out one and scored twice. Daleep Sandhu walked twice and scored a run. Sean Fitzpatrick went two for two, walked and scored a run and snagged many wild pitches to prevent runs from scoring while playing catcher.

BABE RUTH DIVISION Dodgers 13, Cubs 1 The Dodgers returned to La Cañada High School on Saturday morning to play the Cubs and found their groove early with a five run first inning. Hits by Keith Enterante, Griffin Longo, Matt Cannata and Will Guthrie, along with runs scored by Kevin Suh and Connor Uhlir and a sacrifice RBI by Jeff Barker set the tone for the Blue. In the third, Longo got things started with a massive triple and was batted in by Cannata. Then Shabham Surani banged a huge double to score Barker, who had walked, and Nate Eisenberg sacrificed to send Surani scampering home.

Local Cub Scouts got a preview last week on how authorities rescue stranded hikers and climb snowy mountain ranges. They passed around an ice pick, held snowshoes and tested the weight of a harness. The demonstration, held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in La Cañada Flintridge, was part of the Success Through Awareness and Resistance (STAR) program offered through the Crescenta Valley Sheriff's station. STAR teaches youth about ethics, values and possible future careers, said Deputy Eddie Tsuang.

Paradise Canyon Elementary Den 5 Tiger Cubs made a surprise visit to a varsity-wrestling match at La Cañada High School on Jan. 8. The surprise wasn?t from the wrestlers but from the Tiger Cubs. ?We thought there was going to be an eighth grade basketball game,? said den mom/leader Kim Hershman. But they discovered it was not a basketball game but a wrestling meet. At first Hershman was a little concerned about taking very energetic 6- and 7-year-old boys to a wrestling match.

Several members of Den 6, Cub Scout Pack 519 of La Cañada Flintridge visited the Valley Sun office last Friday. The scouts, along with their parents, were given a tour of the newspaper and shown various functions which allows the staff to put out the publication every week. The visit will count as a communications bead that the scouts can add to their Tiger Beads. Each bead is like a merit badge for older Boy Scouts. Participating in the visit were Tiger Cubs Ben Chant, age 6 ½, Calvin Lim, 7, and Nicholas Rafert, 6. All three are in the first grade at Paradise Canyon Elementary School.
