Katica (Kathy) Sotany, 89, passed away on June 4, 2009. She was born on the Island of Rab, Croatia on Feb. 21, 1920 in the town of Kampor, as the daughter of Ante and Milka Vidovic. Kathy was married to Joseph Sotany for 52 years. He preceded her in death in 2001. She came to the United States from Germany in 1949 and settled with Joe in Pasadena, where she resided for over 30 years before moving to La Cañada, where she lived for the remaining years of her life. She is survived by her sister Marija Miscak of Rijeka, Croatia, as well as nephew Mladen Miscak and niece Davorka Miscak of Croatia and Italy.

Devon Borisoff, a member of the La Canada High varsity water polo team, has been picked to play on the U.S. men's water polo national youth team following a three-week training camp in Los Alamitos. Borisoff, a resident of La Canada Flintridge, is one of a 15-member squad which will participate in two international tournaments in the next two weeks. The team will play against teams from Croatia, Greece, Hungary, Italy and Serbia tomorrow (Friday) through Sunday in Zagreb, Croatia.

Four countries, seven flights, one boat cruise and more than 20 water polo games later, the La Cañada Water Polo Foundation?s varsity-level team has arrived back in town. And of course the 16 globe-trotting athletes can be found back in the pool, now practicing as the La Cañada High School Spartan water polo team, feeling pretty good about the upcoming fall season. ?I think this trip helped us become more of a team,? said senior Nate Vail. ?I feel more confident this year than I have in the last two or three years.

Renowned artist to be featured at Verdugo Hills Art Association's meeting next week.Mario Mirkovich, successful and renowned California artist, is slated to be the demonstrating artist at the Verdugo Hills Art Association general meeting on Friday, Feb. 3. This demonstration promises to be an exciting event that is open to the public. Non VHAA members are invited for a $3 donation. The meeting will be held in the Citibank Community Room, 3250 Honolulu Ave., Montrose, at 7 p.m. Mirkovich is an oil painter and is best known for his scenes of natural scenery in Southern California.

Nancy Maclean , a La Cañada Flintridge resident for ten years, has been appointed to the LCF Republican Club's board of directors, according to Chairman Al Restivo . Maclean will work closely Ernest Koeppen as co-chairperson of the club's public outreach program. In this new role, she will responsible for content development of the organization's new website and for outreach programs into the community as assigned by the chairman. Born in Croatia (former Yugoslavian republic)

Two La Cañada Flintridge residents, Nancy Maclean and Chang Hung Yu, will be the featured speakers at the monthly meeting of the La Cañada Flintridge Republican Club to be held at 6:30 p.m. Monday, May 21, at the home of Jack and Barbara Dawson, 4278 La Cañada Blvd. Both speakers grew up under communism before migrating to the United States. Maclean grew up in the former Yugoslavia and Yu in mainland China. Both attended college in the U.S. and went on to become successful managers.

The Verdugo Hills Art Association is an active and vibrant organization that has a full calendar for the month of May. The May 5th meeting will feature Joan Foster, later in the month there is a Mario Mirkovich Oil Painting workshop and at the Montrose Harvest Street Festival, May 7th, VHAA is holding an art book sale. Joan Foster, successful multimedia artist, is slated to be the demonstrating artist at the Verdugo Hills Art Association general meeting on Fri., May 5 at 7 p.m..
