“Jekyll’s finger patterns remain the same when he transforms himself into Hyde,” said Henry Faulds, one of the founders of fingerprinting. Fingerprinting, blood splatter, and DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) are just some of the evidence collected and analyzed by forensic scientists. It is this type of evidence and detective work that seniors at Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy are learning about in their newly developed forensics class. Teacher Diane Sarkarti said the class began last semester and was popular.

Ten Years Ago The musical “Grease” was playing to packed houses in the auditorium at La Cañada High School. Directed by choral teacher LoriMarie Rios, the lead roles were held by Gavin Caswell, Nikki Wetzel, Charlie Young and Kim Lottman.   Twenty Years Ago The Citizens’ Bank branch in La Cañada Flintridge was robbed of $1,892 by a man wearing a business suit and wielding a semi-automatic pistol. Although he successfully escaped from the crime scene, he was arrested four days later after holding up a bank in Agoura Hills.

On October 12, La Cañada resident Elizabeth M. Devine will be honored with the Distinguished Alumnus Award by California State University, Los Angeles. The award is presented annually to a graduate from each of the Cal State L.A.'s six academic colleges who have successfully applied his or her Cal State education in a chosen field and contributed to the University and the community. Devine graduated from UCLA in 1983 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. She entered the Criminalistics Master's Program at Cal Sate L.A. and graduated in 1985.

Los Angeles County coroner officials have identified Genny Herrera, 39, as the woman killed in an apparent murder suicide Friday. Department of the Coroner Investigator Sherwood Dixson told the Pasadena Star-News Saturday that the name of other person killed, a 47-year-old La Crescenta man, would not be released until family members had been contacted. In a comments section on the Star-News website, a woman identifying herself as Gabriela Herrera of Pasadena said late Saturday night the victim was her sister-in-law and that the murder had left her 10-year-old niece without a mother.

When La Cañada High School students begin the fall term next Tuesday they?ll find their school days will become slightly longer. The district board approved a measure that would add four minutes a week to the school schedule. That may not seem like a lot of time, but LCHS Principal Damon Dragos said that those few minutes would enrich all high school students. According to Dragos, the time will allow students to use their school time more effectively. The main change will come with the sustained silent reading program.

Law enforcement officials announced yesterday they are seeking a “person of interest” in an eight-year double murder case involving a La Cañada couple. In August, the San Bernandino County Sheriff Department’s cold case division re-opened the investigation into the murder of Harold “Skip” and Joni Tillman. A witness has since come forward with information that may help investigators find the party responsible for murders. On Feb. 9, 2000, the Tillmans’ bodies were found in two isolated desert graves in Yucaipa, about 75 miles east of La Cañada.

This winter, focus on your writing at the UCLA Extension Writers Studio, four days of intensive writing workshops held Feb. 9-12 in Los Angeles. The Writers Studio brings together a community of aspiring creative writers and screenwriters to work with accomplished instructors.
