Hundreds of people enjoyed the cool stylings of the David Sagal Jazz Quintet at Memorial Park early Sunday evening. Although the free concerts are open to the casual passersby, some family groups have been going to the summer concert series for years, like Judy and David Van Wyk, who have been enjoying the Music in the Park concert series with their friends and kids for at least 13 summers. “The concert series is a La Cañada institution,” said Judy Van Wyk. Nine of their group — which is usually 20-strong — beat the heat Sunday by enjoying the cool lawn of the park.

The sun, along with a couple hundred locals, turned out Sunday to see the David Sagal Jazz Quintet in Memorial Park, the fourth in a series of summer concerts offered by the city of La Cañada and the Valley Sun. Many attendees appeared to be sunbathing as they listened, sprawled out on lawn chairs, blankets, or just the cool grass. One such sun-loving family are the Bennetts, who live in Montrose. Jane Napier Neely Chit Chat From Here and There Sophistication was the style of last Saturday evening's "Night Bloomin' Jazz" black-tie benefit sponsored by S.E.E.D.S. (Supporting Education and Excellence at Descanso.) More than $150,000 was raised to support the botanic garden and its role as a community resource for learning and discovery of nature. Descanso Gardens was a magical gathering place for more than 400 guests at the 6th annual event, which has become one of the most elegant fund-raising parties held in La Cañada Flintridge each year.
