Sept. 17 marked the beginning of the national celebration of Constitution Week, and members of the Don José Verdugo Chapter, National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution have been placing displays in local libraries throughout the area. Displays are currently up at the La Cañada Flintridge Public Library and the Glendale Central Library, and will remain there throughout the end of the month. The commemoration of America?s most important document is one of our country?

The Don José Verdugo Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, marked 60 years in the national society with a celebratory tea at state DAR headquarters in Glendora. Members of the local chapter prepared tea sandwiches and desserts to serve visitors, state and district officers and prospective members during the special event. Today the local chapter has 70 members, according to Chapter Regent Elaine La Marr of La Cañada Flintridge. It all started with an organizing meeting in 1953 at the home of Grace Carpenter, La Marr said, which was attended by 30 women eligible for DAR membership.

Watts new president of Kiwanis Club William ("Bill") Watts was installed president of the Kiwanis Club of La Cañada during the club's Installation Dinner on Sept. 29 at the Oakmont Country Club. Watts joined Kiwanis in 2002 and has been a director under three previous club presidents. Also installed were President-Elect Jim Stratton , Vice President Jim Phillips , Treasurer Bob Wallace and Secretary Skip Boyd . In addition, Carl Christensen , Stewart Lee , Tom Passanisi , Melinda Thompson and Paul Westmoreland were installed as board directors who will serve 2010-2012, with the 2009-2011 board members Diane DellaValle , Brian Fuller , Linda Magarian and Fred Schooley . The immediate past president, Nicholas Berkuta , will continue to serve as a club officer for the next year.
