GLENDALE — David Olmedo-Barrera still remembers when Cal State Fullerton's baseball team won the College World Series in 2004. Olmedo-Barrera, who's entering his senior season with St. Francis, will hope to be a part of another Titans national championship team now that he verbally committed to play for Cal State University Fullerton on Monday. "They have a really rich tradition in Omaha and everything," said Olmedo-Barrera of the Titans' history of advancing to the College World Series in Omaha.

The following are updates from local athletes who are currently playing at the college level. ? Kathryn Poet (Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, 2007) sophomore outfielder, University of Missouri softball: Poet helped the Tigers, the Big-12 champs, capture the Los Angeles Super Regional at Easton Stadium on Sunday and move on to the College World Series in Oklahoma City for the first time in 14 years, where, on Thursday, they?ll face Arizona State. Missouri (50-10) picked up a lopsided 9-1 win in the deciding game of the best-of-three series against UCLA, the No. 2 seed.

After a bit of a roller coaster ride with the Stanford University baseball team over the past three years, La Cañada High graduate Eric Smith is set to begin his climb up the Los Angeles Dodgers minor league farm system. "I am going to sign and start my professional career," said Smith, who was drafted by the Dodgers in the 18th round at No. 566 overall June 6 in the Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft. "It's kind of funny, my family have gone to Dodger games my entire life, it's kind of weird to be drafted by the team I've grown up with - the hometown team.

The following are updates on area athletes playing at the collegiate level . ? Kathryn Poet (Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, 2007) sophomore outfielder, University of Missouri softball: Poet, a former All-Area member, recently competed in her first College World Series. Unfortunately for Poet and the Tigers, their stay in Oklahoma City didn?t last very long. After opening the series with a 7-3 loss to defending champion Arizona State on Thursday, Missouri saw its season end Saturday with a 5-2 loss to ninth-ranked Georgia.
