La Cañada Flintridge Mayor Dave Spence is optimistic about the future for the San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments, over which he will preside for the coming year. The prospect of a Long Beach (710) Freeway tunnel dumping many more trucks and other vehicles onto the Foothill (210) Freeway and into city streets is a daunting consideration for many residents of La Cañada and its surrounding area. OFFENSE QB - Justin Posthuma, senior, St. Francis Co-Mission League Offensive Player of the Year did it all despite dealing with a busted non-throwing arm the last four games of the season. Completed 55% of his passes for 2,115 yards and 19 touchdowns to just five interceptions, while rushing for 787 yards and 14 touchdowns. RB - Ulises Ochoa, junior, Burbank First-team All-Pacific Leaguer set school record with 1,504 yards rushing, doing so on 179 carries for an 8.4 yards-per-carry average and 15 touchdowns.

Playoffs were a non-existant entity for the La Cañada trio of high school baseball teams a spring ago. With plenty of change on the rosters and two new coaches aboard, postseason berths could very well be a welcomed change, as well. Replacing longtime skipper Dennis Ballard, Alex Valadez, who was an assistant for the past two seasons, takes the reins as the head coach for La Cañada, as the program went just 2-10 in the Rio Hondo League a season ago. “I think we're meshing well,” said the 31-year-old Valadez.
