GLENDALE ? The Glendale Sunrise Rotary and the Greater Los Angeles Dry Cleaners Association present Coats for Kids, an effort to help keep children warm this winter. Sponsored in part by the Glendale Unified School District, the goal of the donation drive is to provide coats to kids who may not otherwise have one. The public is urged to bring unwanted coats to any Glendale Unified school or to any Glendale fire station between Friday, Jan. 19 and Friday, Jan. 26. These coats will be dry cleaned and refurbished by participating dry cleaners from the Greater Los Angeles Dry Cleaners Association (GLADCA)

Workers are busy sealing up a building in a shopping center on Foothill Boulevard ahead of the winter season. Concrete was removed around the T.J.Maxx building on Oakwood Avenue near Foothill Boulevard this week and a waterproof lining was placed around the bottom of the building. The construction work is being done by A. J. Padelford & Son, Inc. Fred Buss, a senior planner at the city, said repairs are being made to the building. “This has been an ongoing issue with that particular building,” he said.

Lutheran Church in the Foothills begins its annual "Coat Drive" on Jan. 14. Hangers are available at the back of the church as a reminder to share your extra coats. This year, the church is focusing on collecting jackets and sweaters. Tell your family friends, co-workers or any group you are part of to be part of this. Two women who started their educational paths in La Cañada Flintridge, Lauren Poindexter and Elizabeth Gilliam, are in the same class at Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine in Roanoke, Va. and recently participated in the “White Coat” ceremony there. Poindexter is a 1998 graduate of La Cañada High School who attended USC and then earned a master's degree in kinesiology from University of Arkansas. She is vice president of the medical school's Class of 2015. Gilliam, who graduated from LCHS in 2003, attended Caltech for her undergraduate studies.

Boy Scout Brandon Brotsky and several of his friends spent Saturday morning collecting and unpacking boxes and bags full of coats. They added their coats to the almost two tons of donated coats to the "Coats for Kids" project sponsored by the Glendale Sunrise Rotary and Los Angeles County Dry Cleaners Association. Brotsky had dropped off 400 fliers asking for coat donations throughout local neighborhoods. He chose to do this as his Eagle Scout project. "[I chose this project]

The Los Angeles Zoo is pleased has announced the birth of two different primate species at the Zoo. On Dec. 5, a golden cheeked gibbon was born; on Dec. 12 a Kikuyu colobus monkey. The golden cheeked gibbon is a species of lesser ape that inhabits the rain forests of Cambodia, Vietnam, and Laos. The gibbon is regarded as the greatest acrobat of the animal kingdom. Its long arms (which are 40% longer than its legs) help it swing through the forest. The young gibbon is able to cling to its mother's fur unaided as she leaps and swings through the trees and ropes of her zoo home.
