Sylvia Baca began her tenure August 1 as La Cañada Flintridge?s new city clerk. Baca has been in her office for only a week, but told the Valley Sun that while settling into a new town and job, City Manager Mark Alexander and other members of the city staff ?have made me feel welcome and comfortable while settling in.? In contrast to some of the larger cities she has worked at, Baca noticed that La Cañada?s small town environment has many benefits. She said fewer city hall employees increase camaraderie and cooperation among co-workers, who collaborate together between the different departments.

If managing money is your forte, La Cañada Flintridge has two openings on an financial advisory committee. Interested candidates who are residents of La Cañada can apply to the city's Investment and Financing Advisory Committee by Aug. 30 at 5 p.m. The City Council will then conduct interviews in September and select the new members in October. The appointments will fill positions vacated by Keith Ban, who resigned in July, and James Poindexter, who is stepping down from the committee due to health issues.

The city of La Cañada Flintridge is inviting interested residents to apply for several City Commission and Committee seats becoming available effective June 1. The deadline for submission is Monday at 5 p.m. Currently, three seats apiece will be vacant on the following panels: The Planning Commission; Design Commission; Investment & Financing Advisory Committee; Parks & Recreation Commission; Public Safety Commission; and Public Works & Traffic Commission....

Ten Years Ago Jerry Fulwood, then city manager, announced that a former city clerk for the city of Poway, Marjorie Wahlsten, would assume that role in La Cañada Flintridge, beginning in January 2003   Twenty Years Ago Verdugo Hills Hospital was given permission by the City Council to display 36 of its blue-and-white flags along Foothill and Verdugo boulevards in observance of the hospital's 20th anniversary. Thirty Years Ago La Cañada Flintridge resident and businessman Jeff Dewey was heading up the annual “Shop in La Cañada Flintridge” campaign for the local chamber of commerce.

You'd think that with a City Council Election coming up in March, the city website would mention that we are in the middle of the nomination period for candidates (Nov. 15 – Dec. 10). However, there is nothing on the front page of the city website under "Current News & Events. " There is no mention of the nomination period on the Elections page in the City Council section. There is no mention on the "News & Announcement's" page for the City. Hello? It makes you think that perhaps the purpose of the city's website is only to benefit the City Council incumbents' chances.

Sylvia Baca, currently serving as deputy city clerk and records manager for the city of La Habra, will begin her tenure in La Cañada Flintridge on August 1 as the town's new city clerk. Caroline de Llamas has been serving on an interim basis since the departure of former city clerk Kathleen Sessman. Baca's duties include the organizing the city council agenda, posting notices to alert the public on council meetings, and taking minutes during the meetings. She is also in charge of all election activities, record management and ensuring that the municipal code is up to date.

City Hall announced some personnel moves this week, filling two vacancies in top city management. City Manager Mark Alexander announced the hiring of Kevin Chun as administrative services director, filling a job that the city has been searching for a candidate for some two years. The post is actually a new one, restructured from the assistant city manager job formerly held by Alexander. Chun will administer the staff and direct the parks and recreation department, among other duties.

The absentee ballots cast in today's La Canada Flintridge City Council election, the results of which were announced at about 9:15 p.m., gave incumbents Dave Spence and Steve Del Guercio the lead. Out of 1,650 ballots, mail-in voters gave Spence 888 votes, or 53.3%; Del Guercio 875 votes (53.0%); challenger Vance Haemmerle 651 votes (39.4%) and challenger Robert Richter 645 votes (39.0%) City Clerk Sylvia Baca and her election team as of 9:28 p.m. were still counting ballots cast at the polls today.

La Cañada Flintridge City Hall is seeking candidates to fill a vacancy on the city’s Planning Commission that opened last month when then-Commissioner Michael Davitt was elected to City Council. Residents can obtain application forms at City Hall or on the city’s website, but must file by 5 p.m. on April 29. City Council members are expected to interview candidates in early May and make their appointment during a council meeting scheduled on May 16. The newly appointed member’s term of service would last through May 13, 2014.

Filing began this week — and will continue through 5 p.m., Dec. 5 — for two open seats on the La Cañada Flintridge City Council. The election is scheduled for March 3, 2009. The two full term (four-year) open seats are currently occupied by Mayor Stephen A. Del Guercio and Councilman David A. Spence, both of whom have indicated they intend to run for re-election. “I have a campaign committee and a campaign treasurer all lined up, and we’re ready to roll,” said Spence, who added that he doesn’t take anything for granted in an election, despite his popularity within the community.
