Last week, St Bede's hosted author and blogger Lisa Hendey. Hendey is the founder of the website CatholicMom.com. Marriage and family therapist Richard Lyon will speak about parenting at the La Cañada Presbyterian Church on Sunday, Oct. 20. Rev. Amy Pringle had trouble sleeping Friday night. She woke up crying and thinking of the nearly 30 lives lost in the mass shooting at a Newtown, Conn. elementary school earlier in the day. "The more I thought about it, the more I realized we needed to do something," she said. "We needed to come together as a community. " Pringle, of St. George's Episcopal Church in La Cañada Flintridge , coordinated a prayer vigil Saturday afternoon with her husband, Rev. Bryan Jones of St. Luke's church in La Crescenta.

The La Cañada United Methodist Church is holding an Easter celebration on Saturday, March 23. The event, which runs from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., includes an egg hunt, crafts and games for children. Joy Moore will be in the pulpit at 10:30 a.m. this Sunday at La Cañada United Methodist Church, located at 104 Berkshire Place. Moore is an associate dean of African American Studies and teaches preaching classes at Fuller Theological Seminary. She is standing in for the Rev. Elaine Cho, who is in New Jersey attending the National Korean-American UMC Clergy Convocation. At 7p.m. on Tuesday, May 6, the church will hold its monthly Taize prayer service. “Grief Share,” a six-week grief support group, will be offered at La Cañada Presbyterian Church beginning Sunday, May 4, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. This group is open to community members and meets in the church library. The support session will be led by Patrice Gibson, a Stephen minister at the local church, as well as by the Rev. Beth Palmer and the Rev. Susan Wallace Moriarty. It centers on a series of DVDs that address various aspects of grief. Each meeting will also include a group discussion on a daily topic.

When a small group of La Cañada Congregational Church members first got the notion to make a list of donations and memorials made by congregants over the years, it seemed like an interesting side project. What the small committee didn't know then was that the church historian books and records kept throughout the past century would take them on a journey, not only into LCCC's own rich beginnings, but through the development of the community and its founding families. After two years of research, longtime church historian Sally Emerson - along with church members Joyce Holmes, Jo Anne Kennick and Carol Kulluk - compiled the "La Cañada Congregational Church History & Memorial Book.

Approximately 200 people turned out April 16 to hear Olympic athlete Kate Hansen speak at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Foothill Boulevard about her journey from the streets of La Cañada to the luge world championships and to Sochi, Russia. "Hollywood Glamour: Movie Music with A Mission" is the theme of an upcoming fundraiser sponsored by La Crescenta Presbyterian Church. Singing, dancing and comedy by performers of all ages will be showcased. The event takes place from 2 to 4 p.m. on May 4 at the church, located at 2902 Montrose Ave. Cost is $15 at the door, $10 for advance tickets, which can be purchased by calling (818) 249-6137. The proceeds will be used to purchase building supplies for the school and medicines used in mobile medical clinics for Haitian cane cutters and their families.

La Cañada United Methodist Church celebrates Holy Week with a Good Friday service at 7 p.m. April 18, an Easter sunrise service Sunday at 5:45 a.m. in the church's outdoor amphitheater, and the regular 10:30 a.m. worship service led by Pastor Elaine Cho that will include music by the Sanctuary Choir and the Men's Chorus. A continental breakfast follows the sunrise service. Childcare for pre-K is offered during the 10:30 a.m. service. Last weekend, more than 60 children from La Cañada and neighboring Altadena turned out to enjoy games and an Easter egg hunt during the church's Easter party.

La Cañada Presbyterian Church has chosen "Let's Journey Together to Jerusalem" as its theme for Holy Week and has a slate of offerings beginning with Palm Sunday this weekend. All events are open to the community. On Sunday, the Rev. Dr. Gary Dennis will speak on "The Praise Before the Storm" at the 7:55, 9:25 and 11 a.m. worship services. Also on Sunday, a time of prayer and meditation will be offered at 9:30 a.m. in the Cook Prayer Chapel. At 2 p.m. the Chancel Choir and Orchestra will present "Absolute Heaven," a concert showcasing French romantic composers from the late 19th century.
