WRESTLING La Cañada 54, St. Paul 18: The Spartans concluded a runner-up finish in the Rio Hondo League with a road victory Tuesday evening. The win officially locked up sole possession of second place for the Spartans, who improved to 4-1 overall and in league and will put in a bid for an at-large berth to the CIF Southern Section Division VI Dual Meet Championships at Redondo Union High School on Feb. 8. “We're hoping to get one of those berths,” Spartans Coach Justin Luthey said.

PASADENA - A second-half scoring spree doomed the Flintridge Prep girls' soccer team in Wednesday afternoon's Prep League opener at defending league champion Pasadena Poly. Two local youths, Chelsea Johnson from Crescenta Valley High School and Abraham Frandsen from La Cañada High School, were honored last week at "Mormon Night at Dodger Stadium." A tradition for many years, "Mormon Night at Dodger Stadium" draws thousands of members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from numerous stakes in the greater Los Angeles area. (A stake is a geographical area which includes seven to 10 local congregations.) Six graduating high school seniors who are members of the church in the greater Los Angeles area are honored each year for outstanding academic, extracurricular activities and community service.

Courtney Perry, a junior at La Cañada High School, was crowned Miss La Cañada Flintridge 2013 Thursday night. The radiant new royal, the daughter of Doug and Sue Perry, learned she would reign for the coming 12 months during the 101st annual installation dinner for the La Cañada Flintridge Chamber of Commerce and Community Association, held at the LCF Country Club. Courtney is especially fond of working with and in support of youngsters, according to the biographical material provided by the La Cañada Junior Women's Club, which oversees the court selection for the chamber.

This fun musical, based on the excitement caused when Elvis Presley was drafted, is filled with dialogue, names and sayings reminiscent of that time period.

With nary a league title or a playoff win among two local softball teams a season ago, the 2011 campaign is one in which improvement is sought across the board. Last season, Flintridge Prep worked its way into the postseason only to fall in the wild-card round. Meanwhile, Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy will all looking to scrap its way into a postseason slot, as well. Prep boasts a healthy returning class, with Coach Julie Jaime having nine players with starting experience back on the diamond looking to contend for a Prep League title.

IF - Laina Do, Junior, Burbank Shortstop was a perfect 20 for 20 stealing bases, while also hitting .444 with 36 hits, 27 RBI and 27 runs in a second-team All-Pacific League season. IF - Kelsey Drange, Senior, La Cañada First baseman came up clutch over and over in playoffs, including a two-out RBI in a 1-0 win over Nipomo in the semifinals. Hit .390 and notched a .493 on-base percentage with just three strikeouts all season and no errors at first base. UTL - Mireya Hernandez, Junior, Mayfield Cubs backstop was the Prep League Most Valuable Player after hitting .506 on 39 hits, adding 34 runs batted in, 20 runs scored four home runs, seven doubles and seven stolen bases.

Santa Claus was booked solid Friday night as about 100 children waited in line to wish for video game systems, dolls and candy during La Cañada Flintridge's 18th annual Festival in Lights at Memorial Park. Snow, reindeer, caroling and the ceremonial lighting of the holiday display were among the highlights, as was the naming of the finalists for Miss La Cañada Flintridge 2013. Stephanie Beck, Chelsea Johnson, Maddie Johnson, Courtney Perry and Nora Sagal are in the running, with the winner to be announced Jan. 17. But the line that wrapped around Santa's post and stretched out halfway through the park made it obvious that Santa was the festival favorite.

SOFTBALL Flintridge Prep 18, Chadwick 3 (five innings): Chelsea Johnson went four for five and scored a pair of runs Tuesday to lead the visiting Rebels in a Prep League contest to claim their first victory of the season. Rachel Simon also went four for five and drove in two runs for Flintridge Prep (1-11, 1-4 in league). Maya Okamoto had three hits and Drew Montgomery added two for the Rebels. BOYS' TENNIS Chaminade 12, St. Francis 6: St. Francis' doubles team of Alex Kevakian and Kristian Esteve swept their three sets, 6-1, 6-3, 6-2, on Tuesday in a Mission League home match at Fremont Tennis Center.
