A recent luncheon gathering of friends who are sustaining members of the La Cañada Flintridge Orthopaedic Guild was a time to renew those friendships and reminisce. Marilyn Center was hostess and Bernita Perrine co-hostess for the event; the two are sustaining member chairmen for the Guild. Active members were also in attendance to ask for suggestions as to how best to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Guild. The 50th anniversary party will be held in the spring and sustainers were asked to find pictures and mementoes of the last five decades years to share at the celebration.

My first experience being the publicity chairman for a nonprofit came when I was about 15. I had the unenviable job of writing press releases and delivering them to the Valley Sun and to the Ledger newspaper in Glendale. These articles were typically along the lines of “a good time was had by all,” a catchphrase of the day that summed up our youth group's outing to Huntington Beach, or perhaps to an amusement park or a museum. If we were submitting any photos, they had to be in black-and-white for best reproduction in the newspapers.

Two local residents were in the spotlight Thursday night when the La Cañada Flintridge Chamber of Commerce and Community Assn. installed its 2012 board officers and crowned royalty during a dinner event held at the LCF Country Club that also launched the chamber's centennial celebration. Wes Seastrom, a native La Cañadan and longtime local Realtor, accepted the gavel to lead the organization this year. Seastrom, a former La Cañadan of the Year, spoke with gentle humor of his family, friends and his reluctant agreement to join the chamber's board of directors several years ago. Seastrom is stepping into the shoes of outgoing chairman Joel Peterson.
