It was a special day for the young boys of the La Cañada Cougars, a 10-and-under baseball travel team that won state this past month, as they got to meet La Cañada?s mayor, Steve Del Guercio, last week Thursday. ?You?ve made your city proud,? Del Guercio told the U10 team at a ceremony at City Hall. Mayor Del Guercio then congratulated the boys for coming in second place at the recent California State Games in San Diego. Joined by their manager Steve Kim, assistant coaches Paul Absy, Roland Pasion, Kurt Bednar and Ricardo Barrera, and proud parents, the team made a presentation to the mayor and to Carl Alameda, head of parks and recreation, thanking them for practice time on the La Cañada fields.

The La Cañada Cougars 10-and-under baseball travel team took home the Silver Medal, finishing in second place at the prestigious 2008 California State Games, July 11-13, in San Diego. Pool play began Saturday morning with a close opening game that resulted in a 5-5 tie with the Cherokees. Impressive pitching by Michael Calmette kept the game close. The Cougars had a chance to win in the bottom of the sixth with players on second and third base and one out, but could not capitalize on the opportunity.

La Cañada's 12U-Gold softball team qualified to play in the California State Games (Junior Olympics) with a fourth place finish out of 13 teams at the Amateur Softball Association's Southern California Western District tournament. On July 13, the team will travel to San Diego for the Regional "C" level championship tournament with teams from all over California. The event includes participating in opening ceremonies at Qualcomm Stadium with 25,000 other young athletes across many different sports.

Softball team wins home tournament The La Cañada 12-and-under softball team kept rolling this weekend, as it won the district championships hosted in La Cañada over the Fourth of July weekend. The event was hosted by the La Cañada Junior Baseball and Softball Assn. The team won four straight games to advance to the Western District championship game against Fillmore on Sunday morning. La Cañada came out on top in five innings, 12-1. Taking first place in the tournament qualified the squad for the American Softball Assn.

The La Cañada/La Crescenta Under 14 Girls All Star Softball Team, enjoying one of its best seasons in a decade, finished in the top six at the California State Championship Softball Tournament in San Diego July 15-17. The team complied a 3-2 record in the tournament, including two thrilling come-from-behind victories, and is 10-5 overall. The best players from both the La Cañada Junior Baseball/Softball Association and the Crescenta Sports Association made up the 14-member squad.

Fresh off their finest seasons in recent memory, both the La Cañada High and Flintridge Prep boys' water polo teams are intent on matching that success. The Spartans and Rebels find themselves in very different positions to do so, however. La Cañada graduated five All-Rio Hondo League players and essentially its entire offense from a year ago, while Prep returns everyone except its two goalkeepers. There's plenty of new for the Spartans this year, including new coach Christian Flores, who is La Cañada's fourth coach in three years.
