The Glendale-Burbank Republican Assembly invites all Republicans and friends to celebrate 72 years of continuous operation on Saturday July 28. The group has been part of the California Republican Assembly since its inception. Past presidents have included Congressman Carlos Moorhead, Mayors Paul Burkhard, Bob Garcin, Jerold Milner and Larry Zarian, Councilwoman Mary Ann Plumley and Judges Kenneth White, Neil Lake and Marion Gubler. The event will take place at the home of Roberta and Sal Gangi in Glendale.

Local Republicans met on a recent evening at Dish Restaurant for the monthly meeting of the La Cañada Flintridge Republican Club. The keynote speaker was Mike Spence, an officer of the California Republican Assembly. Spence is also a 16 year member of the West Covina Board of Education. Spence brought members up to date on how the state party organization views the past election and the plans the party has established to face the challenges that lie ahead in the 2006 election.

Democratic Club to meet Sunday The next meeting of the Cañada Crescenta Democratic Club will take place on Sunday, Feb. 22, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the home of Greta Pruitt , 2330 Shields Avenue, La Crescenta, 91214. The meeting will focus on issues in education. The club will present two speakers: CJ Howard , who teaches French and English in the Los Angeles Unified School District, and who is a graduate of Teach for America; Paul Cummins , who is the founder and executive director of the New Visions Foundation and of many other organizations involved in assisting children and families.

After 19 years at the helm of the La Cañada Flintridge Republican Club, Al Restivo has called it quits. Restivo, who turned 76 on Wednesday, plans to publish a book and also wants to free up time to resume college teaching and expand his business consulting work. Ernest Koeppen, who was the club's first vice president and campaigned last year for a seat on the La Cañada school board, assumed presidential duties upon Restivo's departure this week. Restivo founded the club in 1993, making an independent organization out of a local chapter of the more staunchly conservative California Republican Assembly.

On science, Creationism [Re: In Theory, Religion Section, Valley Sun, Jan. 24] The recent release of “Science, Evolution, and Creationism” by the National Academy of Sciences Institute of Medicine, is again raising the question whether Creationism or “intelligent design” should be taught in public schools. The authors of the report conclude that it should not, because the theory of evolution, as part of the biological sciences, can be proven, while Creationism by any name is a belief that cannot.
