CAGER CAMP STANDOUT - La Canada Elementary School fifth grader McKay Anderson, second from right in All-Star team photo, recently participated in the Southern California Jr. Phenom Boys' Basketball Camp. The event, sponsored by Adidas, was held at Cal Poly Pomona. More than 150 fifth, sixth and seventh grade players participated. McKay, selected for the camp's All-Star team, scored 15 points and pulled down eight rebounds in his team's All-Star game victory. McKay's All-Star selection qualifies him to attend the annual National Adidas Boys' Junior Phenom Camp.

Services were held Tuesday at La Cañada Presbyterian Church for Matt Cronin of La Verne, (formerly of La Cañada), who passed away June 9, 2005, at USC Norris Cancer Hospital at age 23 after a courageous battle with ocular melanoma. Born May 30, 1982 in Glendale, Matt attended Paradise Canyon Elementary School, La Cañada 7/8, La Canada High (class of 2000) and Cal Poly Pomona. He was in Indian Guides, a Cub Scout, and played baseball with the La Cañada Junior Baseball Association.

Immediately after completing band camp at Cal Poly Pomona - an annual tradition to bring freshman performers into step while promoting camaraderie - members of the La Cañada High School Marching Band performed a season-preview field show on Aug. 15 at their campus on Oak Grove Drive. PHOTOS: La Cañada High School Marching Band pre-season practice performance First, the band enjoyed an In-N-Out burger meal, then took to the field to demonstrate the skills it has so far mastered in music and movement, cheered on by friends and family members.

Last season, with Clarke Anderson leading the way, the Spartans boys? basketball team made it to the second round of the CIF playoffs before falling to Palm Springs. Although Anderson graduated, the team retained a number of great players: Jeff Grigg, Mike McGlashan, Omar Rady, Mason Holle, Matt Faber, Mike and Eric Jilg and Rocky Moore. The summer started strong for the Spartans with a pair of third place finishes in two tournaments?the Cal Poly Pomona Tournament and the SCIBA Tourney.

Supplying water to thousands of homes and buildings in a semi-arid climate threaded by dwindling river systems is no small task. Foothill residents currently get less than half their water from local groundwater basins and canyon runoff. The remaining 60% is imported from faraway sources such as the Sacramento/San Joaquin Bay/Delta Watershed and the Colorado River, and supply is at the mercy of drought conditions and regulations occurring hundreds of miles away. Now local officials with the Foothill Municipal Water District have a plan to create more locally sourced water.

Soccer camp has top coaches Players at Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy's annual three-day soccer camp last week got the advantage to learn skills from a group of accomplished coaches. The event, held July 6 to 8 at the school, served to introduce incoming freshman players to the high school's varsity team. The camp was under the direction of veteran coaches Frank Pace and Kathy Desmond. "We've done this at our camp for many years," said Pace, the FSHA co-coach. "It's great for the players."

An hour before band camp began at La Cañada High School, a throng of freshmen and some returning band members tried on uniforms and stood on makeshift platforms to be fitted. As start time approached and more students filed into the band room, the explosive beats of a snare drum punctuated the excitement of friends reconnecting after the summer. The school's 10-day intensive band workshop took place from 1 to 8 p.m. every day this week and will continue at Cal Poly Pomona through the weekend and until Wednesday.
