Our canine companion, a black Labrador rescue dog from the Pasadena Humane Society, once was delicate. She now has turned rude and has become, at times, uncouth. How did this happen? Personally, I blame the Transportation Security Agency (TSA) for her recent change in demeanor. Our dog, Miss Audrey Hepburn, does not fly, therefore she has not experienced the TSA directly. But she does listen to Fox News, so she is well aware of the growing lack of public confidence in the TSA. Recently, I caught Miss Hepburn drinking water out of the toilet.

Last weekend we attended the U.S. Marine Corps 236th Birthday Ball at the Marine Memorial Club in San Francisco. The guest of honor was the former Commandant, General James T. Conway, who gave a rousing and inspirational address. We were surrounded by men and women of courage. We had the traditional cake ceremony. The cake is wheeled in after the color guard. A piece is given to the eldest Marine veteran. He shares it with the youngest Marine. The eldest Marine present that night was born in 1921.

Last month on St. Patrick's Day, the dark gray skies threatened rain and the air was chilly. I parked my car on Honolulu Avenue in Montrose and hurried into the welcome warmth of the Merle Norman Studio. The storeowners Kris Kline and Kim Kelly were busy with customers. I browsed for a while in the sparkling clean, well-lighted shop. A beautifully dressed woman with impeccable grooming asked Kris what eye make-up colors would complement a red outfit. Kris suggested charcoal and black for evening, browns for daytime.

The La Cañada-Flintridge Newcomer's Book Club had a party at Laura Van Dellen's house in celebration of the club's 100th book. Members came dressed as a character from one of the books and brought a gift relating to one of the books for the gift exchange. There was plenty of food and drinks, and a cake decorated for the event. There were games about the books and winners received prizes; books of course. The book club started in November 1997 and the first book was "Lessons Before Dying" and the 100th book was "Kindred."
