Appraiser Attends Certification Course Appraisal Course Associates recently announced that area businesswoman Diane DellaValle attended the six-day, on-site course, in Baltimore, Md., titled “Appraising Personal Property: A Core Course in Valuation Studies Featuring USPAP.” Doing so places DellaValle among a handful of personal property appraisers worldwide who have obtained this advanced appraisal knowledge. “With the IRS now requiring donation appraisals to be written in accordance with such standards as the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP)

Local businesswoman Linda Taix, of Taix Workout Studio and Extreme Bootcamp, said she was stunned when she got a telephone call from Assemblyman Anthony Portantino’s office informing her she’d been selected as one of two La Cañada women to be honored as Women of the Year. Taix’s co-honoree, Houri Aposhian, of Pacific Horizon Bancorp, also expressed surprise at the recognition. Each year, Portantino, state Senator Jack Scott and Assemblyman Paul Krekorian honor businesswomen from across Southern California for their contribution to the economic growth and well being of the area.

As she begins her second year as La Cañada Flintridge Chamber of Commerce Chairman of the Board, local businesswoman Barbara Marshall has big plans for her work with the chamber in the coming year. Marshall, who owns Barbara Marshall State Farm Insurance Agency on Foothill Boulevard, was installed at the chamber?s Jan. 15 Installation and Awards Dinner at Oakmont Country Club. Marshall is a longtime La Cañadan and is well known in the community for her civic involvement and for her canine companion, Morgan, a Labrador retriever, who serves as mascot at Marshall?

More than 20 women will be honored at this year's Women in Business Awards luncheon set for Sept. 7 at the Castaways in Burbank. State Sen. Jack Scott, Assemblymember Carol Liu and Assembly Majority Leader Dario Frommer will present the honorees at this seventh annual event. The outstanding leaders to be honored were chosen for the award based on nominations from the communities of the 21st Senate District, 43rd and 44th Assembly districts. California state legislators are looking for outstanding businesswomen. They are accepting nominations for the 2006 Women in Business Awards. State Sen. Jack Scott, Assembly Majority Leader Dario Frommer and Assemblymember Carol Liu will honor outstanding local women from the business world at a ceremony in the fall. The categories have been expanded to include Women in Arts and Entertainment, Women in Law and Junior Businesswoman of the year. In all, there are 11 categories in private, public and non-profit sectors.

Nominations are being sought for the fifth annual Women in Business Awards to be held Sept. 1. The event, sponsored by Senator Jack Scott and Assemblymembers Dario Frommer and Carol Liu, will recognize outstanding women business leaders in the 21st Senate District, and the 43rd and 44th Assembly Districts. Nominees must conduct business or live in at least one of the following communities within the appropriate senate or assembly district, which may include all or part of: Altadena, Arcadia, Atwater Village, Burbank, Chinatown, Duarte, Eagle Rock, East Hollywood, Echo Park, Encino, Glassell Park, Glendale, Griffith Park, La Cañada Flintridge, Highland Park, La Crescenta, Lake Balboa, Los Feliz, Monrovia, Montrose, North Hollywood, Pasadena, Reseda, San Gabriel, Sherman Oaks, Silver Lake, South Pasadena, Studio City, Tarzana, Temple City, Toluca Lake, Valley Village or Van Nuys.

It may have been a man's name on the shop's door but more than likely there was a women in the back room. Now women are out of the backroom and into the boardrooms all across America. It is this strength and growth that was celebrated at the sixth annual Women In Business Awards luncheon held yesterday. "In the last five years there has been a 10 percent growth in business but women owned businesses have grown by 20 percent," said Senator Jack Scott of the 21st District.

Sept. 15, 1922-Oct. 24, 2004 Martha DeSantis-Herrman was born Sept. 15, 1922 in Chicago, Ill., the second of five children. Her father John DeRosa, a prominent musician, moved the family to Southern California in the late 1920s. After losing her husband Paul in 1966, and while raising her five children, Martha became a successful businesswoman in La Cañada Flintridge, where she lived. Martha was actively involved in the Rotary Club, La Cañada Tournament of Roses Assn., Clipper Club, La Cañada Thursday Club, Kiwanis Club and numerous other civic and community organizations.

Ten Years Ago The new corporate office building for Sport Chalet, Inc. was taking shape in the summer of 2002. About 100 employees were expected to move into the 27,000-square-foot building in the fall of the same year. Twenty Years Ago La Cañada Flintridge real estate executive Ray Dilbeck announced plans to construct his corporate and sales office at the southwest corner of Foothill Boulevard and Chevy Chase Drive. It was estimated that the new building would be ready for occupancy in the summer of 1993.

During an evening reserved for celebrating community spirit, La Cañada High School junior Robin Miketta was on Thursday named Miss La Cañada Flintridge 2011. Inspired by parents Brett and Lynette Miketta to consider a career in teaching, Miketta will lead the town's five-member Royal Court this year in their role as youth ambassadors for the city and chamber of commerce. Miss La Cañada Flintridge 2010 Malia Mailes passed the crown to Miketta as part of the La Cañada Flintridge Chamber of Commerce and Community Association's 99th annual Installation and Awards Dinner, held at the tony ballroom of the La Cañada Flintridge County Club.
