La Cañadans Max States and Jonathan Sullivan have returned from the Junior Olympics with bronze medals this week after winning third place at the Junior Olympics with their club, Santa Monica Beach Club. The SMBC team was able to firmly secure a national bid and high seeding at the Junior Olympics by winning the silver at the SCVA Junior Boys Volleyball Classic, a North American tournament held in Anaheim. Sullivan, a lefty, worked as opposite hitter while States, a righty, worked as an outside hitter.

La Cañada High water polo player and junior-to-be Riley Kessler has enjoyed a great summer with her club team. In mid-July, the Los Angeles Water Polo girls’ 16-and-under club took first place at the United States Club Championships. This Sunday, her team doubled their success,finishing third and walking away with a bronze medal in the Junior Olympics. Kessler was a large part of her team’s success, as she scored three goals in the bronze medal game, all from six meters or further.

Dylan Walker, a soon-to-be junior at Flintridge Prep, has just returned home to La Cañada Flintridge with a Silver Medal. He competed in the USA Volleyball Junior Olympics in Minneapolis and received a the medal in the 16 and Under Open Division. The four-day event featured Club Volleyball teams from throughout the United States, as well as Canada and Puerto Rico. Walker, a 6'4" outside hitter, plays on the Santa Monica Beach Club's 16 and Under Team, which went into the tournament ranked fifth in the country.

Last Thursday it was announced all five La Cañada High School students competing in the Los Angeles County Outstanding Regional Occupational Program Student competition won. Silver medals winners were John Pearson from the culinary arts class, Jace Armstrong from the media arts class and Laura Newcombe from the retail marketing class. Bronze medalists were Grace Moon from the Microsoft Office class and Donald Simpson from the computer networking class. Students from 22 other schools competed.

Franz Phillip Hosp V, formerly of La Cañada and deployed since January of this year in Baghdad, Iraq, was recently awarded the Army Bronze Star Medal for exceptional meritorious service while serving as a Battalion Support Platoon Leader and Company Executive Officer during Operation Iraqi Freedom III. In April, 1st Lt. Hosp became executive officer for C Company, 1st Battalion 64th Armor Regiment stationed in Baghdad. On the morning of April 29, during a coalition forces combat patrol, 1st Lt. Hosp and his men came under attack from multiple vehicle born explosive devices.

Kate Hansen won a bronze medal in women's luge at the Junior World Championships in Igls, Austria, on Sunday, completing a rollercoaster season on an upswing. A bad time trial cost Hansen a shot at the Olympics in December, but a triumph at the Junior Championships was important for the 17-year-old La Cañada High student. Hansen placed behind gold medalist Corinna Schwab of Germany and silver medalist Sandra Gasparini of Italy, who is headed to the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

FSHA?s Academic Decathlon team takes 1st place in Div. 2 Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy?s academic decathlon team took first place in Div. 2 after winning 40 medals in the Southern California Private School competition at Bishop Alemany High School on Jan. 31 and Feb. 6. Each of the three La Cañada High School seniors who competed in the Los Angeles County Outstanding Regional Occupational Program Student competition received medals. For the second time in a row, Laura Newcombe received a silver medal for her marketing and accounting skills she demonstrated in her business project. "It is just as exciting as the first time," she said. Both Joe Williams from the media arts class and Melissa Constantino from the culinary arts class received bronze medals.
