Letters to the Editor Sent from Bromley with her love I am writing from Bromley, Kent, in England. You may thank Lindsay Harris for this unusual contact. My mother pointed out her Youth All-Star article in your paper dated March 5. I grew up in La Cañada; the ties and friendships formed during those years have withstood time and distance, so much so that they have actually grown with the next generation. Lindsay Harris is fast friends with my daughter, Celine.

Adam Hodges was named the new La Cañada High boys' cross country coach “three weeks ago” and began practicing with the Spartans last week. “I think this year is going to be a bit of a rebuilding year, especially for the boys with a new coach coming in,” said Hodges, who is La Cañada's third boys' cross country coach in as many years. “We have a lot of younger runners this year, which we are really excited about because that gives us a chance to work with them and get them progressing over the next few years.” It's the first high school coaching job for the 41-year old Hodges, who is a coach and personal trainer at La Crescenta's Alp Fitness with a background in triathlons.

In preparation for the upcoming school year, I am awed by the historical importance of La Canada Elementary School. Although the physical location of the current school is only 37 years old, the school itself has a 120-plus year history. The school currently has two reminders of its historical beginnings. One is the school bell, which dates back almost as long as the school's historical foundation, and the second is a 10-foot-high painting of the district's first teacher, Helen Haskell Thomas.
