Helen M. Lecky (nee Rodway), a daughter of Canada and longtime California resident, died Jan. 31 at age 84. Born and raised in Toronto, Helen attended teachers' college after graduating from Riverdale High School in 1939. During World War II, Helen taught in a two-room schoolhouse in rural Ontario, and met her husband-to-be, Charles, who was serving in the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals. They were married in Toronto in 1947 and moved to Los Angeles in 1949. Helen combined a 20-year career in the banking industry with the raising of two children and the cultivation of a great many friends of many nationalities.

Katie Hansen on Senior Nat’l Team La Cañada’s favorite luger Katie Hansen placed second in the third and final USA Luge National Team race-off held on Saturday to clinch a spot on the U.S. National World Cup team. Katie, a junior at La Cañada High and member of the girls’ basketball team, finished third in the first two events to grab the third overall seeding. In January of this year, Hansen fast-tracked her way into the Junior division (20 and under)

Katie Hansen said it best herself: “It sounds a lot worse than it is.” After going through a 30-minute interview and standing for an additional 20 minutes afterward, without complaining of pain or even wincing, she made it clear the accident while training at the Whistler track under a month ago did little harm to her other than perhaps keep her from training and competing for a month. A lot has happened to the strong-willed La Cañada High junior and U.S. Luge National Team member since she won the World Junior Luge Championships last February.

NORTHEAST GLENDALE — Brett Kanda and Brennan Amirkhizi have gotten to know all of the nuances surrounding venerable Oakmont Country Club. Kanda is a longtime club member and Amirkhizi has had his share of memorable rounds on the 89-year-old course as a member of the Glendale Community College men's golf team the past two seasons. Both competitors strolled onto the course Monday morning to take part in the biggest rounds of their respective careers at the U.S. Sectional qualifying round.

Oh my goodness, it’s February already! We have sped right into the award and benefit season so our community is aflutter with activity. Our very fashionable ladies are coordinating their elegant party clothes while their escorts are updating their classic tuxedos with new lapel and tie trends in order to attend the many upcoming events. Last Saturday night the architecturally beautiful Italian Romanesque Doheny Memorial Library on the USC campus was aglow with soft lighting as formally-dressed guests gathered in the building’s soaring rotunda for the 20th annual Scripter Award dinner recognizing this year’s best film adaptation of a novel.

If you find yourself channel surfing on Saturday at around 5 p.m. Pacific Standard Time, tune into CBS College Sports Network and you may see a familiar face. Former Spartan Katie Barry, who was once a featured member of the Spartans track and field squad, can be seen playing in the National Ultimate Frisbee Collegiate Championship as a member of the UC-Santa Barbara?s team. The Burning Skirts (the UCSB ultimate team?s actual nickname) had a long, treacherous road to the finals.

Ten Years Ago After several months of consideration, the board of directors of La Cañada's community center decided to hold onto its formal name, the Roger Barkley Community Center, reported Timothy Gosney, then president of the board. The facility, long known to locals as The Youth House, had been named for the radio personality and philanthropist after his 1997 death. Today it is known as the Community Center of La Cañada Flintridge.   Twenty Years Ago A former employee of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory filed suit in September 2001 against the lab and two individuals, saying he was laid off for blowing the whistle on cost overruns and mismanagement on a $175 million project.

March 13, 1924 to May 23, 2004 Marge Phetteplace, a housewife, mother, businesswoman and longtime resident of La Cañada, passed away in her sleep Sunday evening after a brief illness. She was 80. Her husband, Bill Phetteplace, passed away on April 22 of this year. Bill and Marge were married on New Year's Eve in 1942. Their home on Descanso Drive was the scene of many festive Christmas Eve, Thanksgiving, and other family celebrations. Marjorie Elvira Tarr was born at home on Jackson Street in Glendale in 1924.
