For some, an empty rooftop holds few promises. For La Cañada High School physical science teacher Tom Traeger, it has become the perfect setting for a multifaceted hands-on learning experience in atmospheric conditions, nuclear fusion and solar energy. In 2008, Traeger addressed a five-page grant proposal to energy company BP in which he detailed how he hoped to use an on-campus solar panel to supplement classroom learning for his earth science and physics sections. It would also be a joint collaboration with the school’s environmental science Green Club, he added.

I am writing to state my support for Joel Peterson. I have known Joel and his family for many years and have had the opportunity to witness his commitment to our community and to our schools. I had many discussions and saw his hard work being one of the founders and leaders of the La Canada Outreach Committee. At his request and to show my support, I hosted a Holiday reception for the Outreach Committee in December 2003, the organization's first official event. I saw his community commitment again in his efforts to help educate our citizen's about the recent bond and parcel tax measures.

W hile news of BP's efforts to cap the oil gusher in the Gulf Coast continued to make headlines last week, 11th-graders at Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy were busy Thursday afternoon raising more than $3,000 for wildlife rescue efforts. The carnival-like fundraiser at La Cañada's Memorial Park is the year-end project of the high school's advanced placement environmental science classes. The annual mandatory projects are decided after advanced placement tests in May. "It's awesome how it's just a couple of us brainstorming an idea," said Serena Morris, 16. Planning for the fundraiser began about three weeks ago, said environmental science instructor Mary Schnieders, a project advisor.

We are just a week away from Thanksgiving Day. Of course, that means that the day after the big national feast it is time to put up the holiday lights and try to remember where you stashed the garland that goes around the lamp post as the community prepares for the festive season ahead. This past weekend, two theaters in the greater Los Angeles area opened their curtains for exciting family holiday entertainment. Last Saturday afternoon the musical, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” tried to upset the citizens of Whoville at the historic Pantages Theatre in Hollywood.

These range from PTA president to organizing volunteers to stuff envelopes for the Back-to-School mailings parents receive at the end of each summer. She has given advice from topics as diverse as PTA procedure to telling volunteers to switch direction every half hour when stuffing envelopes to avoid back and hip pain.
