Two La Cañadans honored at Bowdoin Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine held its annual Sarah and James Bowdoin Day ceremony on Oct. 30 to honor those undergraduates who distinguish themselves by excellence in scholarship. Caitlin Chien Clerkin and Amanda Dorea Gartside of La Cañada Flintridge were among the honorees. Clerkin is a member of the Bowdoin Class of 2011; Gartside is in the Class of 2012. Those students who are designated Sarah and James Bowdoin Scholars are in the top (highest GPA)

More than 2,300 additional winners of Merit Scholarship awards financed by colleges and universities have been announced by National Merit Scholarship Corporation. These Merit Scholar designees join over 2,200 other college-sponsored award recipients who were announced in late May. Officials of each sponsor college selected their winners from among Finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program who will attend their institution. College-sponsored awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the institution financing the scholarship.

At a recent family gathering, Ginny and Al Kelley of La Cañada announced the engagement of their daughter Shannon Kelley to Mark Rapo, son of Melissa and Paul Rapo of Cape Cod, Mass. The bride-to-be is a 1991 graduate of La Cañada High School. In 1995 she received a bachelor of arts degree in social science from Westmont College in Santa Barbara. She is currently a partner alliance manager for Palladium Group, a technology consulting firm in Boston. The groom-elect is a 1990 graduate of Barnstable High School, in Hyannis, Mass.

In a double ring ceremony held in September at the historic Park Street Church in Boston, Mass., Shannon Ardes Kelley exchanged wedding vows with Mark Andrew Rapo. The bride is the daughter of Ginny and Al Kelley of La Cañada Flintridge. The groom is the son of Melissa and Paul Rapo of Cape Cod, Mass. For the fall afternoon wedding, the bride wore a full-length strapless Duchess satin gown with antique crystal beading on the bodice. She wore a chapel length crystal beaded veil and carried a bouquet of white roses and hydrangea.

La Cañada Unified school board members Wednesday again broke from closed session without taking additional action on a complaint filed against high school math teacher Gabrielle Leko. Board President Scott Tracy said that they would meet for a third time on the issue 8 a.m. Dec. 26 at district headquarters. About 75 people were present to address board members before they went into the closed-door deliberations. Among them were those who continued to call for Leko to be disciplined.
