Members of Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy’s academic decathlon team explored Paris over Thanksgiving to broaden the girls’ studies of the French Revolution, the theme for this year’s decathlon competition slated for Jan. 30 and Feb. 6 at Bishop Alemany High School. “The students were particularly excited to see firsthand the art and history that we had been studying since August,” said decathlon coach Mario Pariante, who teaches social science at FSHA.

For the second consecutive year, the St. Francis High School Academic Decathlon team will compete on the national stage. The road began in February where the Golden Knights participated in the regional competition at Bishop Alemany High School. The Golden Knights had some impressive individual accomplishments, with the first Team, bringing home 46 medals, and the second Team also bringing in 37 medals during the regional competition. Having placed second as a team, St. Francis scored well enough to receive a wild card invitation to state competition.

St. Francis High School recently participated in the National Academic Decathlon Competition for medium schools and continued their success. Students participating in the decathlon are divided into three groups based on their current GPA. The national competition was held online April 23-24, and the Golden Knights placed 3rd overall in team competition scoring 28,381 points. I n addition to their impressive finish as a team, they came away with 15 individual medals, and junior John Papadopoulos was the top student in the nation for the Varsity division, scoring 5,186 points.

St. Francis High School?s team captured first place in the Southern California Private School Academic Decathlon , and is one of 60 schools that will advance to the state competition in Sacramento March 13-16. The awards ceremony was held Feb. 15 at Bishop Alemany High School. The competition occurred the prior weekend. The Academic Decathlon is a nationally organized scholastic competition with each team comprised of an equal number of A, B and C students. Students take examinations in language and literature, music, science, art, mathematics, economics, essay writing, speech, interview writing and super quiz.

The La Cañada Flintridge Community Center Preschool is hosting its 18th annual Western Round-Up on Saturday, March 5 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the preschool. This western-themed fundraiser will feature pony rides, a petting zoo, carnival games and prizes, a silent auction, a raffle drawing, an IN-N-OUT Burger wagon, a bake sale, balloon animals and an inflatable slide. The Sheep, a local band, will perform. John Bishop, a member of the Sheep, is the father of a graduate of the preschool.
