Mother’s Day. It’s a tough time for me. But I am surrounded by love. I like the presents. This year, Rachel gave me a lavender plant, in a beautiful pot. When I look at it, I think of her. And in my purse, I still have the pen, the one that Andrew gave me for Mother’s Day, the year before he died. On Mother’s Day I think about both my children. This year, there are other concerns. The economy. Our quest to fix things. To repair the world, one disease at a time.

In 2004, our son, 2nd. Lt. Andrew Torres, USMC, died of cancer. He was 23 years old. Andrew was a graduate of the United States Naval Academy (Class of 2002), a Marine and a fine person. In the hours before his death, he asked us, his family and friends, to support cancer research. We initially supported treatment-oriented research at the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center in Los Angeles. A few of Andrew's friends wanted to do more. The first Torres Memorial Golf Classic was held in April 2005.

Your body weight is an “in your face” biomarker of what is going on with the processes of your body.

In the spirit of winter celebrations, the following is the Around Town annual top 10 list of Southern California's greatest people, things and places, in and around the 91011. But first, a disclaimer. In years past, Peggy Stevens, the owner of the Apple Cart gift store, has supported our family's various cancer research fundraisers, including the search for a protein biomarker for liver cancer by La Cañadan Michael Harrington, M.D., which was published in a peer-reviewed journal, and the current research by Faye Eggerding, M.D., Ph.D., into non-coding RNA markers for a variety of cancers.
