It is time to dust off your lederhosen and listen to your favorite oompapa band. Yes, it is Oktoberfest in Montrose. The celebration begins Saturday at noonand ends at 11 p.m. with an estimated 20,000 visitors expected along Honolulu Avenue. This traditional event will offer all those things that Oktoberfest attendees have come to expect: bratwurst, sauerkraut and beer as well as contests, variety shows, bingo and much more. For 30 years the Montrose-Verdugo City Chamber of Commerce has presented Oktoberfest.

The La Cañada Flintridge Tournament of Roses Association’s annual Bingo BBQ will be at the La Cañada Thursday Club, 4440 Woodleigh Lane, on Saturday, April 30, starting with a no-host reception at 6 p.m. The $45 per-person cost (must be 18 or older) includes dinner prepared by Simply Perfect Catering, one door-prize ticket for numerous great prizes, one bingo card for eight games of bingo, and two prizes for the winners of each game. Also, opportunity tickets for approximately 18 prizes will be sold, and silent-auction items will be available for bid. Additional bingo cards are $1 each.

The La Cañada Flintridge Tournament of Roses Assn.'s annual Bingo BBQ will be held at the La Cañada Thursday Club, 4440 Woodleigh Lane, on Saturday, April 26. The event gets underway with a no-host reception at 6 p.m. Tyler Wright, president and chief executive of the YMCA of the Foothills, will serve as emcee. Tickets, which are $50, include dinner prepared by Los Gringos Locos, one door-prize ticket for numerous prizes and one bingo card for eight games of bingo. Also, opportunity tickets will be sold.

On Saturday, May 5, LCF Tournament of Roses Association will hold its annual Bingo Barbecue at the Crescenta-Cañada YMCA. Mary Gant, chair of the event, says since it's on Cinco de Mayo this year, Arbor Crest Catering is altering its menu to prepare a Mexican barbecue. Dinner will begin with Caesar salad (yep, it originated in Mexico), then on to rice and beans, the usual wonderful meat BBQ'd right there at the Y, tortillas, and topped off with a cake courtesy of Vons La Cañada.

"Day Of Our Lives" star, Kevin Spirtas, and "Dancing With The Stars" sensation, Mario Lopez (schedule permitting), will co-host An Evening of Legendary Bingo along with "Bingo-Boy"Jeffery Bowman and the incomparable Belle Air, as a fund-raising event for the Burbank-based, Media City Ballet's upcoming production of "The Nutcracker," to be presented at the Alex Theatre in Glendale in early December. The Bingo event, planned for 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 29, will be held at Hamburger Mary's, 8288 Santa Monica Blvd.

The La Cañada Thursday Club, 4440 Woodleigh Lane, will again be the venue when the La Cañada Flintridge Tournament of Roses Assn. holds its annual Bingo BBQ on Saturday, April 28, starting with a no-host reception at 6 p.m. Guests must be 18 or older, and reservations must be received by April 23. Cost to attend is $50 and includes a barbecue meal, one door-prize ticket and one bingo card for eight games. Many prizes have been lined up for the popular event, but more would be welcome.

It has become a community tradition since our first La Cañada Flintridge Tournament of Roses Association New Year’s Day float that a Bingo Barbecue would be one of two major fund-raisers to insure that our float will make its way down Pasadena’s Colorado Boulevard each Jan. 1. This year marks the 29th Bingo Barbecue event and it drew more than 150 supporters. It is always such a joyful crowd, with many members wearing Western-inspired duds. The event was held at the La Cañada Thursday Club.

A rush of about 80 people walked through the door of Verdugo Hills Hospital on Friday. They did not come because of a health scare, however—they were there to play some bingo. The Verdugo Hills Hospital Women's Council hosted its fourth annual bingo fundraiser that night. To date, the organization has raised more than $3 million for the hospital, although Friday was about much more than making money. “This is more of a 'funraiser' than a fundraiser,” said Kate Kaneko, a Women's Council member.

A good time was had by all at the recent La Cañada Flintridge Tournament of Roses Assn. Bingo Barbecue. This party, which raises funds for the building of our Rose Parade float, has always been a popular event, and this year marked the 28th year that people came to show their support for our float. This year’s float is called “3-2-1 DIG!” and fits perfectly for the theme of the 2011 New Year’s Day Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, “Building Dreams, Friendships and Memories.
