Wine and Gourmet Food Event is this Sunday afternoon On Sunday, Sept. 20, the 7th Annual La Cañada Flintridge Wine and Gourmet Food Event will take place from 2 to 6 p.m. at Memorial Park. Joining forces on this community event are the Kiwanis Club of La Cañada , the La Cañada Flintridge Educational Foundation , the Verdugo Hills Hospital Foundation and the La Cañada Chamber of Commerce . More than 100 wines will be poured and 27 of our local restaurants will be on hand to showcase their offerings.

Looking every bit as statuesque as Lady Liberty, actress Tracy Scoggins spoke the stirring words inscribed on the famed New York tribute to the United States as The Pasadena Pops Orchestra began its Music Under the Stars concert with Bruce Healey's arrangement of Irving Berlin's "God Bless America." Prior to the free concert, thousands of community members crowded Centennial Square in front of Pasadena City Hall to enjoy a festival in celebration of its grand re-opening. They enjoyed face painting, stilt walkers, juggling clowns and live jazz ensembles.

Union Station Homeless Services will hold its annual gala on May 11. The event, at Langham Huntington in Pasadena, will honor Pasadena Mayor Bill Bogaard and his wife, Claire. Actors Melora Hardin and Gildart Jackson will host. Union Station is an agency that helps homeless and low-income people. The Pasadena Senior Center will hold the 5th Annual Pasadena Follies variety show and fundraiser at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 22. The show, themed "Pasadena Follies Goes West," takes a humorous look back at Pasadena's colorful history through the eyes of Wild West characters the likes of Doc Holliday, Calamity Jane, Annie Oakley, western actor Walter Brennan and Pasadena's architectural icons the Greene Brothers. The Pasadena Follies Goes West represents more than just a fun evening of frolicking on stage; proceeds from the Pasadena Follies will directly benefit the Center's 140 programs and services and enable the Center to continue serving seniors in the community.

On Sunday, June 25, the Rusnak Auto Group held its 7th Annual Pasadena POPS Concert for select clients at Descanso Gardens in La Cañada Flintridge. This year's concert was a very special event, devoted to the celebration of Paul Rusnak's 40th Anniversary as a premier automobile dealer. Over 1,500 guests and employees attended the concert, appropriately titled "As Times Goes By." Before the concert commenced, dignitaries from various cities throughout Los Angeles County presented commendation plaques to Rusnak.

The 2006 Pasadena Golf Classic, benefiting the Outreach Services of the Pasadena Senior Center, is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 15 at Brookside Golf Course. Registration will begin at 11 a.m., with shotgun start at 1 p.m. Golfers may sign up as a foursome or an individual. This will be a scramble event. Each golf entry fee will entitle golfers to a gift bag, boxed lunch and special dinner event to honor Pasadena Mayor Bill Bogaard. Costs for the 2006 Pasadena Golf Classic are : individual player, $225; foursome, $800, single payment required.

The La Canada Flintridge City Council at its regular meeting this week waded into the liquor store licensing debate that has been a recent hot button discussion across the state California. Under current state law, certain liquor establishments, long regulated by the ABC, are exempt from some local controls. State Senator Jack Scott, who is the primary sponsor of Senate Bill 148, which seeks to empower more local control, participated in a Tuesday morning public hearing of the Assembly Committee on Governmental Organization, chaired by Assembly Member Jerome Horton convening at the Pasadena City College Education Center.

The culmination of over 20 years work, community involvement and stubborn dedication was realized last Saturday morning with the opening of the newly fabricated Flint Wash Bridge in Hahamongna Watershed Park adjacent to La Cañada. The ceremony was attended by approximately 200 people and dignitaries including Mayor Bill Bogaard of Pasadena, Mayor David Spence of La Cañada Flintridge, and state Assemblyman Anthony Portantino. There were also many community members, some with their dogs and some on horseback, waiting to cross for the first time the 155 foot bridge.
