Participating in the Arroyo High Tournament, the La Cañada girls' varsity basketball team handily defeated Upland, 47-25, last Saturday to improve to 7-2 for the season. The Spartans finished tournament play on Monday with a game against Arroyo. Results were not available at press time. La Cañada will next compete in the Glendora High Tournament next Tuesday through Friday. Emily Ballard led the Spartans with 12 points. Raeanne Butts, Jessica Lew and Emmilee Ringelberg followed with eight points each.

Renaissance drops 86 on Bell Gardens Renaissance Academy 86, Bell Gardens 55: Gil Tacita contributed a game-high 35 points Tuesday to spark the host Wildcats (10-5) in a nonleague contest. Dushon Carter had 16 points for Renaissance Academy, which received 15 from Brian Bourgeois. ? Ten Years Ago A change in weather patterns sent daytime temperatures to the 100-degree mark for a few days in late April 2004, surprising locals who had been experiencing daytime highs in the 70s. On the plus side, a Southern California Edison spokesperson reported that there were no heat-related power outages "or even rolling blackouts. " Twenty Years Ago The La Cañada Flintridge Chamber of Commerce directors voted to support then-Gov. Pete Wilson's letter to have the federal government foot the bill in controlling immigration.

A call to the Crescenta Valley Sheriff's Station helped deputies arrest four people last week on suspicion of grand theft of a vehicle, of possession of a loaded firearm and of identity theft. "It's another example of the community working with police," Detective Sgt. Victor Ibarra said. Deputies arrested Crystal Joy O'Connor, 22, of Palmdale; John Henry Cardenas, 40, of Bell Gardens; and Bryce K. Tubb, 33, and Shervan Armoogam, 38, both of Whittier, at about 4:30 a.m. March 28 in the 4500 block of Marvin Street in La Cañada Flintridge.

La Cañada High will induct three new members into its Athletic Hall of Fame in ceremonies at halftime of the boys' varsity basketball game against Monrovia in the main north gym tomorrow (Friday). The game will begin at 7 p.m. and the three inductees are Russell Bernstein, Class of 1998, Lauren Arase, Class of 1999 and Lloyd Masson, Class of 2000. The LCHS Athletic Hall of Fame was founded on June 1, 1989, by then Athletic Director James Harvey, who is now an administrator at the high school.
