A small but intensely dedicated crowd huddled around the stage at La Cañada’s Memorial Park Friday afternoon to celebrate the John Birch Society’s 50th anniversary. The FBI has determined that a bank robber deemed the ?Sleeves Bandit? is responsible for a robbery in La Cañada and one in La Crescenta. The agency, along with the police and sheriff?s departments, is asking for the public?s assistance in identifying the suspect. The two crimes in the area attributed to the suspect are the La Crescenta Citibank robbery that occurred on Dec. 26, 2008 and the La Cañada Citibank robbery on Jan. 30, 2009. It is also believed he is responsible for a La Cañada pharmacy robbery that same day. In some earlier reports by the media the suspect involved in the La Cañada robbery had been called the ?

The new president’s economic stimulus package may mean money for local transportation, street improvement and sewer needs, at least that’s the hope of local officials. The La Cañada Flintridge City Council Monday night spent about an hour during its study session deciding ranking of items to be sent on to Washington, D.C. for consideration in the as yet undecided list of projects in the Obama stimulus package. Unlike last year’s Bush administration $145 billion stimulus package, which put refund checks in the mail to millions of taxpayers as well as tax relief for businesses, this year, the about $819 billion package — which last week passed the House is being debated this week in its $900 billion version by the Senate, according to the Associated Press — is expected to be distributed between a wide variety of local and national needs.
