Fourth-graders at the La Canada Flintridge school created musical insturments and art from recycled materials. Members of the Italian Catholic Federation, Branch 374, at St. Bede the Venerable Roman Catholic Church in La Cañada Flintridge on the weekend of March 22-23 held a successful St. Joseph Table fundraiser in the Parish Center. A second series of conversational Italian classes will begin at St. Bede Parish from 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays, beginning April 26. Professor Nancy Ammirato returns to teach the courses, which are sponsored by the Italian Catholic Federation (ICF). The focus will be on beginning and intermediate conversational Italian. The cost is $150 per person and includes a workbook. For information, call (818) 952-1969. Class size is limited to 20 students and classes are open to all ages.

St. Bede the Venerable Roman Catholic Church will host a karaoke and baked potato event this Saturday. The event, which will raise funds for the Distinguished Student Service Awards Program, runs from 5 to 9 p.m. on May 18. The program recognizes junior high students who are active in the community. The church is located at 215 Foothill Blvd., La Ca ñ ada. Admission is $10 per person and includes food. Members of the Board of Directors of the Italian Catholic Federation branch at St. Bede the Venerable Roman Catholic Church were installed at the annual ICF Los Angeles Archdiocese District Council Installation Luncheon on Jan. 19. The event was held at Casa Italiana at St. Peter Church in Los Angeles. Locals installed were Al Restivo, branch president and first vice president of the district; Mark Mannarelli, first vice president; Maria DeSalguera, second vice president; Fiora Marcucci Murphy, financial secretary; Joseph Vinci, treasurer; Nancy Lieggi-Ammirato, sentinel; trustees Masmiliano Leonida Bastone and Rae Ann Mertz, and alternate trustee, Jack Kojimoto.

With the voice of an angel and a smile that lights up the room, 13-year-old Abby Davitt?s enthusiasm is contagious, her teachers and mentors say. Davitt, 13, was nominated as this week?s Valley Sun All Star by Barbara Kuhl, Davitt?s eighth-grade teacher and vice principal at St. Bede the Venerable Catholic School. Davitt?s dedication to her school work and friendly, cooperative behavior will help her go far in life, Kuhl said, adding, ?You have a lot of faith in the future of America when you see kids like this.

Attorney Michael Thomas O'Callaghan, a La Cañada Flintridge resident who was active in many local organizations, died last week in Pasadena. He was 49. O'Callaghan passed away on Aug. 12 after a long battle with lung cancer, his sister, Margaret O'Callaghan, said. He was never a smoker, she noted. Throughout the whole ordeal O'Callaghan maintained a good attitude and remained optimistic, his sister said. “He was just an incredible guy,” she said. “He always had a smile on his face, no matter how bad he was feeling.” O'Callaghan lived in the city for more than a decade and was active in community organizations and institutions in La Cañada, including St. Bede the Venerable Catholic Church and Descanso Gardens.

A memorial service for La Cañada Flintridge attorney Michael Thomas O'Callaghan, who died on Aug. 12, will be held at St. Bede the Venerable Catholic Church on Saturday, Aug. 17. O'Callaghan was active in community organizations in La Cañada, including the church. He passed away at age 49. Born on December 6, 1963, he attended Arcadia High School before graduating from USC and Loyola Law School. He also studied at Georgetown University Law Center and Pepperdine University. The memorial service begins at 10 a.m. The family requests that donations be made in lieu of flowers.

Nick Sercel and Andrew Nettles, students at St. Bede the Venerable Catholic School, were recently recognized as distinguished service award winners by local branch 374 of the Italian Catholic Federation. Branch President Al Restivo, and First Vice President Mark Mannarelli presented checks for $100 each to the young men at two meetings of ICF held in February and March at the St. Bede Parish Center. The boys were also presented with a framed certificate, which honored them for their distinguished service to their community, church and school.
