I have to hold down the commentary today so that I'll have room for some great summer barbecue ideas. These recipes call for pork but the salsas could accompany grilled chicken, halibut or swordfish. A couple weeks ago I was interviewed as an expert on container rose gardening. My patio garden looked great, but shortly afterward I was hit by a really nasty spider mite epidemic. I hope your garden is weathering the heat. This is one of the few times I am thankful for the oak canopy; it helps the plants hold onto their moisture.

Descanso Gardens will be turning back the pages of time when on Labor Day weekend the Gardens will hold a backyard barbecue much like its founder E. Manchester Boddy was fond of doing when it was his private estate. The festivities are slated from 4 to 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 6. Guests can see the gardens from a new perspective while riding in a horse-drawn wagon from 4 to 6 p.m. From 5 to 7 p.m., on the main lawn, Patina will barbecue plenty of tasty food. Also to enhance the fun, there will be train rides on the garden's miniature railroad and a band playing music of the 1930s and '40s for listening and dancing.

It has become a community tradition since our first La Cañada Flintridge Tournament of Roses Association New Year’s Day float that a Bingo Barbecue would be one of two major fund-raisers to insure that our float will make its way down Pasadena’s Colorado Boulevard each Jan. 1. This year marks the 29th Bingo Barbecue event and it drew more than 150 supporters. It is always such a joyful crowd, with many members wearing Western-inspired duds. The event was held at the La Cañada Thursday Club.

Some call it the "Touchdown Church," others "The Point After" or maybe the "Jesus Statue." While all these names and any others are suitable, none are the true name or meaning. For almost 50 years, the statue with the outstretched arms on the really high pedestal has been a landmark in the foothills. Tens of thousands — no, hundreds of thousands — have seen and admired this great monument. Patients from Verdugo Hills Hospital can get a glimpse of it from their rooms, and many say they get comfort when seeing it. Children have grown up viewing it. Then after having their own families, they share it with their children, and so on. Three, four generations have seen and marveled at its uniqueness.
