The 19th Annual Glendale Community College Alumni Awards Banquet will be held on Thursday, May 3 at the Oakmont Country Club. Awardees include Paul Locker, recipient of the Raymond D. Edwards Award of Merit for Career Achievement and Community Service and Karen Sartoris, recipient of the J. Walter Smith Award for Distinguished Service to GCC. Margaret Hammond will be honored with the Patrons Club Presidential Award. Scholarships will also be awarded. Tickets are $45 each. Call 551-5199 for information and to reserve tickets.

The Armenian Bone Marrow Donor Registry (ABMDR) will be hosting its 6th annual "Match for Life" fund-raising banquet at 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 5, at the Glendale Hilton Hotel. This year's banquet will honor ABMDR board members, Woman of the Year, Catherine Pelley, president of Glendale Memorial Hospital; and Man of the Year, Patrick Petre, administrator of St. Joseph Hospital. The banquet, hosted by La Cañadan Mark Geragos, chairman of the ABMDR, will also honor and recognize business and volunteers of the year.

The official announcement of the fifth annual Children Stand for Children Awards Night and Banquet was made recently. The awards banquet is set to take place in the first week of May, where special guests will range from politicians to entertainers. This annual awards dinner recognizes and honors community activists and organizers of all ages, as well as service providers, while heightening awareness for advocacy, service and leadership. The Children Stand for Children Advisory Board was originally organized and created by Hillsides, a Pasadena non-profit that creates safe places for children at risk and their families.

More than 150 guests were on hand to celebrate the Crescenta Valley Chamber of Commerce's Annual Recognition Banquet held last Thursday at the La Cañada Flintridge Country Club. The purpose of the evening was to recognize those who contribute so much to the foothill community. They included local residents, members of law enforcement and fire prevention and other organizations that help to keep the integrity of the area. The evening began with an enthusiastic welcome by Chamber President Paul Dutton and Honorary Mayor Ira Hart.

The Verdugo Hills Council of the Boy Scouts of America gathered in grand fashion on Thursday night to install new officers, recognize award winners and present the Eagle Scout Class of 2009, of which 27 out of 72 Eagles were present, said master of ceremonies and Council Advancement chair Dan Humfreville. Verdugo Hills Council Commissioner Rahla Lindsey was installed as the Council?s new president. She succeeds Council President Tom McLurkin Jr. The Verdugo Hills Council serves Scouts in the Glendale, Burbank, North Hollywood, Sun Valley, Sunland, Tujunga, La Crescenta, Montrose, La Cañada Flintridge and Eagle Rock areas, according to the Council website.

More than 20 members of the 2005 La Cañada boys' and girls' cross country teams were honored at the post season awards banquet held last Thursday evening. While coach Tony Hanes and his assistant coaches, Syliva Edgar and Brian Zentmyer, praised all 53 runners on the teams, 22 were singled out for special recognition. Chris Bruegge was named the Most Dedicated, Co-captain boys' varsity, Jason Chen the Most Dedicated boys' freshman/sophomore, Kyle Chen the Most Improved boys' junior varsity, Marie Collins the Most Valuable Player girls' junior varsity and Austin Facer, the Most Improved, Most Inspirational, Co-captain boys varsity.

The Interscholastic Equestrian League (IEL) recently held its 2005 -- 2006 season awards ceremonies at the Sportsman's Lodge in North Hollywood, where several La Cañada High student riders were honored. Nearly 350 people attended the year-end ceremonies which included a banquet, the awarding of $12,000 in scholarships, and recognition for the top schools and riders in this year's competitions. Sixty-five schools represented by more than 425 riders competed in this year's horse shows.

The Fine Arts Club of Pasadena presented its annual Visual Art Award and the Performing Art Awards at its year-end banquet held Monday, June 7 at the Athenaeum, Caltech, in Pasadena. The Visual Art Award was presented by Susanne Belcher, chair of the awards committee, to Marina Hajek of Pasadena. Hajek was eligible to participate in the Fine Arts Club award as a student enrolled in art classes at Pasadena City College. She was selected to receive the monetary award by a jury of art professors at the Community College.

The Valley Sun on Feb. 27 published two letters critical of the recent ad placed in your newspaper by Protect La Cañada Flintridge (“Protect LCF”) pertaining to the proposed expansion of Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy. Protect LCF has retained legal counsel and engineers to assist in their review and analysis of the draft specific plan. The draft plan would allow the school to build a large event and banquet facility for hundreds and thousands of guests, for gatherings and parties unrelated to the mission and operation of a religious girls school.

California Kids Golf Tour (C.K.G. Tour) concluded its inaugural season on Jan. 14 with two events that day, a family tournament (adult/junior) in the morning at Alhambra Golf Course and an awards banquet at Lobster King Restaurant in the evening. Residents of La Cañada Flintridge who received awards are: All-star awards: Boys 14-17 -- William Varsh and Benjamin Orloff; Boys 8 -- Collin Morikawa and Team Play Awards: Daniel Rhee, Trevor Brown, Christian Torres, Jamie Pierce, Katie Pierce and Cindy Kim C.K.G.
