Here, there and everywhere, it is looking like Christmas around our community. I love the bright light displays in people?s yards and also seeing a beautifully decorated Christmas tree on display in front of a big window. The kid in me just loves this time of the year. I hope that the dazzle of it never wears off. Talk about razzle-dazzle, the main street in the little neighboring village of Montrose is a wonderland of tiny white lights sprinkled in the trees lining Honolulu Avenue.

Tongues have been buzzing on the boulevard this week about the Playhouse's new clothes. The Sierra Madre Playhouse has taken on a decidedly older "new look," with bright colors and lots of new lighting. Handsome green columns frame the façade, which has been repainted in shades of tan and yellow. Lighted letters atop the marquee spell out Sierra Madre, and an enormous script "Playhouse" in green neon adorns the wall above the marquee. A new art deco-style centerpiece adds dimension to the marquee, and the whole marquee is highlighted by yellow neon outlining.

The addresses remain secret until the day of the event, but the 2010 Home Tour committee has revealed these tidbits about the four architectural treasures: ??A world-famous, Oscar-winning actor/director, with his then-wife, commissioned this villa in 1989. The historic Lanterman House was open to the public for viewing on Sunday afternoon and visitors were invited to wear summer white clothing and picnic in the yard. Women strolled the lawn with wide-brimmed hats and white vintage gowns, while men dressed in straw boater hats and cream-colored suits, appearing like they’d come straight out of a Renoir or Seurat painting. Built in 1915, the Lanterman House is a concrete Craftsman style house with period furniture, arts-and-crafts pottery and wood-paneled walls.
