There is an incredible amount of celebrity gossip in the media recently. From Anna Nicole Smith's drama to Brittany Spears' challenges. Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan and Sponge Bob are all subject of rumors and innuendo. An unlikely source of much of the hot gossip that's on the news has been traced back to a unlikely location just south of La Cañada High School. Unbeknownst to the neighbors, and the Frisbee players in Hahamonga Park, this innocuous business is a hotbed of information trafficking.

My sisters are hooked on magazines with titles such as "Star," "In Touch," and "Us." They live in Northern California, and every once in a while, bless their hearts, they forward me a parcel of these reads. It is their vain attempt to enlighten their older sister, who thinks that in this case, ignorance is bliss. However, one of my UCLA lit classes requires that students analyze a magazine market unfamiliar to them. So I dutifully dove into publications produced by (I'm guessing)

Quintus Horatius Flaccus, the Roman lyric poet cited above, reminds us that such is the tragedy of the temper of the world that we slight our heroes to obscurity. The vacuous tendencies of pop culture takes us from that which is the tonic of our own preservation. Instead, we have sold our souls to the worship of celebrity in lieu of the veneration of the children of the gods, our heroes.
