The Amgen Tour of California, the annual eight-stage cycling race that weaves through the state top to bottom, announced last Thursday it will return to La Cañada and the Angeles Crest Highway for the third consecutive year in May. Stage 6 of the race will run from Pasadena, starting at the Rose Bowl, moving westward through Flintridge and then northward through Angeles Crest Highway all the way through Angeles National Forest. From there, the route hops onto highways 138 and 18 to Big Bear Lake.

Traffic signal is being installed at Angeles Crest Highway and Starlight Crest Drive.Caltrans began construction on a new traffic signal at the intersection of Angeles Crest Highway (State Route 2) and Starlight Crest Drive on Tuesday. When complete, the new signal will permit a left turn onto Starlight Crest Drive from westbound (downhill) Angeles Crest Highway. "Instead of having people wait for oncoming traffic, they'll be able to make left turns more safely onto Starlight Crest Drive," said Jeanne Bonfilio, public information officer for Caltrans.

Dress warmly and be ready to sing when the 11th annual Glenola Park Tree Lighting Ceremony and Canned Food Drive is held from 6:15 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 30. Hot cider and cookies will be served at the event, which brings together the community to kick off the holidays in the foothills. The event is sponsored by La Cañada Girl Scouts, Friends of Glenola Park, the La Cañada Noon Kiwanis Club and the City of La Cañada Flintridge. Glenola Park is located at the intersection of Angeles Crest Highway and Vista Del Valle.

A court hearing was delayed Tuesday for the truck driver charged with murder after his car carrier veered out of control on Angeles Crest Highway last year killing a Palmdale man and his daughter. Murder charges against Marcos Barbosa Costa, 44, were reinstated on April 6 by a state appeals court panel, which ruled that Costa was aware of the risk involved when he descended the steep mountain pass. The ruling reversed a lower-court decision to throw out the murder charges. On April 1, 2009, Costa drove a car carrier southbound on Angeles Crest Highway.

A 28-year-old Costa Mesa man was killed this week after his motorcycle crossed the double yellow line on Angeles Crest Highway and he was struck by an oncoming truck. According to a California Highway Patrol spokeswoman, at 11:48 a.m. Tuesday a man driving a motorcycle westbound on Angeles Crest Highway at mile marker 37.5 at a high rate of speed. For some reason he crossed the double yellow line and collided with a Ford truck traveling eastbound. The motorcycle went under the truck and the man was ejected onto the roadway.

Sunday, Sept. 17 Person(s) unknown entered a vehicle parked at the MM33.14 turn out on Angeles Crest Highway and stole a car stereo. Saturday, Sept. 16 Person(s) unknown entered a vehicle parked at MM 885 at Big Tujunga Canyon Road in Angeles National Forest and stole miscellaneous items. Friday, Sept. 15 Person(s) unknown stole a trash can from the backyard of a residence in the 3800 block of Madison Road.

A 48-year-old man who was pursued by Glendale police Thursday, March 8, through south Glendale and ended on Angeles Crest highway is facing charges that include felony evading officers and possession of an opium pipe. According to Officer John Balian, the pursuit was prompted when officers from GPD's special enforcement witnessed a driver, later identified as William Blair, 48, of Lancaster, driving recklessly at high speeds on the southbound 5 freeway near Fletcher Drive. Blair ignored the officer's attempt to pull his vehicle over and continued until the intersection of the 110 and 5 freeways where he was involved in a vehicle accident.

La Cañada Flintridge officials will host a memorial ceremony next Thursday at Glenola Park to mark the one-year anniversary of the April 1, 2009 traffic accident on Angeles Crest Highway that killed a 58-year-old Palmdale man and his 12-year-old daughter. “We felt it was a very tragic event that affected the entire community and we wanted to recognize the importance of it, and also memorialize Angel and Angelina Posca, who were killed in the accident,” said Kevin Chun, director of administrative services.

A motorcyclist died Sunday after crashing into a guard rail near mile marker 69 on Angeles Crest Highway, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Gil Hernandez. Richard Shumway, 71, of Yorba Linda, was riding his 1978 Yamaha on Angeles Crest near Wrightwood at approximately 12:07 p.m. when he drifted into the shoulder of the road, lost control of his bike and crashed into a guard rail, according to Hernandez. Paramedics were dispatched via helicopter, but Shumway was declared dead at the scene of the crash.
