Marcos Costa, the truck driver convicted of manslaughter in a 2009 fatal Angeles Crest Highway crash, has dropped his appeal, according to his attorney. Costa, 46, was sentenced in 2011 to seven years and four months in prison. Palmdale resident Angel Posca, 58 and his 12-year-old daughter, Angelina, died on July 1, 2000 after Costa's truck, which lost its brakes, slammed into Posca's vehicle. “Mr. Costa wants to put this tragic accident behind him,” said Sally Brajevich, appointed to represent Costa in his appeal.

A 49-year-old Bellflower man died Thursday afternoon from injuries sustained in a single-vehicle collision earlier in the day on the Angeles Crest Highway, the California Highway Patrol reported Friday. The incident occurred at approximately 2:30 p.m. when the man's 1993 Mazda sedan was traveling westbound near Mile Post 28.6, about four miles north of Foothill Boulevard. For an unknown reason, the vehicle pulled to the right side of the road, colliding with the rocky hillside and damaging the windshield, right front bumper, fender and wheel, according to a statement from the California Highway Patrol.

While a portion of Angeles Crest Highway is expected to reopen today, loose rocks and other hillside debris could keep traffic off the stretch of roadway between La Cañada Flintridge and Angeles Forest Highway for as long as a month, Caltrans officials announced Monday. Caltrans plans to reopen the portion of Angeles Crest Highway that runs above Angeles Forest Highway to the Islip Saddle intersection with State Route 39, an area about 40 miles from the 210 Freeway in La Cañada Flintridge.

A 55-year-old man was killed in a motorcycle crash Sunday afternoon on Angeles Crest Highway, according to the California Highway Patrol. The motorcyclist was identified as Manuel Lumbattis Morales of Los Angeles, according to CHP Officer Thomas Miller. Morales was riding a 2005 Honda when he collided with a 2012 Lexus CT 200 near mile marker 45 along the highway at about 1:30 p.m., said Sgt. Becky Lynch with the California Highway Patrol's Altadena station. An autopsy was pending, said Coroner's Assistant Chief Ed Winter.

Montrose Search and Rescue is currently working to extract an injured hiker from the Pleasant View Ridge Trail area. The hiker suffered currently undetermined injuries when he fell from the trail at mile marker 62.5 on Angeles Crest Highway, according to Sgt. Randy Tuinstra of the Crescenta Valley Sherriff's station. A helicopter was used to locate the injured hiker, but a team on foot has been dispatched to extract him. “They've located him, he's alive, it's not certain what his injuries are,” said Tuinstra.

Ten Years Ago One motorist died and two people were injured after a head-on collision on rain-slicked Angeles Crest Highway, a few miles north of the city, took place on Feb. 20, 2004. Jared Christopher Miller, 23, of Keizer, Ore., suffered fatal injuries when the 1993 Mitsubishi Expo he was driving collided with a U.S. Forest Service Dodge truck that investigators said had crossed the center line. Rescuers used the Jaws of Life to extricate Miller and his passenger, 19-year-old Jenna Olson, of Portland, Ore., from their vehicle.

Search and rescue teams from Montrose and Sierra Madre were able to locate a Pasadena man late Thursday night after he slipped over the edge of a hiking trail off Angeles Crest Highway, officials said. The hiker -- identified in a  KCAL-TV report as 23-year-old Leiland Merritt -- was a mile and a half into a trail at mile marker 62.5 at Angeles Crest Highway when he slipped over the edge, said Lt. John Hocking. During the fall, the hiker injured his leg. His friend was able to hike back to the base of the mountain and call the Sheriff's Department.  Deputies from Crescenta Valley Station responded to the call at 3 p.m. and tried to locate the hiker before the sun set and temperatures dropped into the low 30s. A man and woman, both in their 20s, were transported to a local hospital after the vehicle they were traveling in plummeted about 400 feet over the side of the Angeles Crest Highway early Sunday morning. Montrose Search and Rescue members and Los Angeles County firefighters lifted the pair out of the hillside on special stretchers called litters that are designed for hazardous situations at around 1 a.m. near mile marker 39.61 on the highway, about 14 miles from La Cañada Flintridge, according to authorities.

A 50-year-old man suffered critical injuries after driving over the side of Angeles Crest Highway and falling about 500 feet Thursday night, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The man may be a La Cañada Flintridge resident, according to the Fire Department. Another driver called 911 at 8:32 p.m. and reported seeing tail lights go over the side of the road, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Charmaine Fajardo. The incident occurred at mile marker 26.96, about a mile north of Greenridge Drive in La Cañada.
