Saturday night Kaitzer informs me, "The girls have a 7 a.m. practice tomorrow with the Children's Choir at La Cañada Presbyterian … can you take them?" I was on the spot; I had to think quickly and in a nanosecond my mind raced through a volume of retorts and subconsciously I picked the right one: "Yeah, I'll take 'em." Since I'm up at zero-dark-hundred I thought this would be an easy task. That wasn't the end of it. They'd practice from 7-8 a.m., sing at the 8 a.m. service and then again at the 9:30 service.

The binder was hefty, easily three inches thick. Rev. Peter Hintzoglou, an associate pastor at La Canada Presbyterian Church, thumbed through it before making his next house call. It holds the names, addresses and pertinent information of 275 parishioners at the church, mostly elderly, who can't get to Sunday services for various reasons — sickness, injury, bereavement, the feebleness of age. So Hintzoglou comes to them. "We are physically not able to go to church, and Peter fills a gap in our lives," said Bill McFadden of La Canada Flintridge as he sat in his living room during one of these visits.

Part 1   Sgt. Wolfgraham was the son of a preacher man. His daddy ministered a church somewhere in the hills of Alabama. As a boy he spent hours sitting in hot, stuffy, churches listening as his father went about the business of saving souls, singing “Amazing Grace.” He grew up a God-fearing man, and would someday answer the calling of the Lord. However, that would have to wait. He had another calling, and he answered it. He joined the Marines, became a warrior, a squad leader, a sergeant, dedicating his very being to fight the faithless in Vietnam.

The popularity of the Music-in-the-Park concert series grows each week. Last Sunday, when the group Smooth performed during the sixth offering of the summer season, the park was curb-to-curb people, several of whom danced to the Funk/Latin/Rock sounds. This Sunday evening's program promises to be different fare than usual. The heart and soul of Scotland will march into town with the Misty Isle Pipe Band. The performance will begin at 6 p.m. with the last gasp of a bagpipe scheduled at 8 p.m. Under the direction of Tom Reoch, who was born in Scotland and founded the band in 1999, this world-class group will be the first Scottish band to perform in Memorial Park.
