Christie Ann Manning, daughter of former La Cañadan Steve Manning and Joan Summers, was recently engaged to Joseph Marchese, son of Joe Marchese and Eileen Walker of Albany, N.Y. The event was announced at a lovely dinner party given by her father and stepmother, Beth, in the Sky Room at the top of the Bonaventure Hotel in Los Angeles. The bride-to-be graduated from San Diego State University in 2007 with a degree in international conflict resolution. She studied abroad in England and Cyprus.

1924-2005 Loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather Paul Emmanuel Kenagy was born on Oct. 23, 1924 in Albany, Oregon. He passed away unexpectedly at the age of 80 on Feb. 25. A resident of La Cañada-Flintridge for 50 years, he graduated from Hoover High School and attended the University of Southern California. He was an avid golfer and a member of Oakmont Country Club. Paul is survived by his loving wife, Helen, and his four daughters: Nancy Sanders of Surprise, Arizona, Paula Miller of La Cañada Flintridge, Connie Lee of Pebble Beach, and Helen Figone of Walnut Creek.

Michael Y. Kim of La Cañada has graduated from the University of Albany with a master's degree in criminal justice. He was part of the more than 800 students participating in the commencement ceremonies on Dec. 11. Zoe Stathis of La Cañada has been named to the dean's list at Syracuse University Martin J. Whitman School of Management for fall 2005. Stathis is majoring in accounting and music industry. To qualify for the dean's list, students must achieve at least a 3.4 grade-point average during the semester.

Richard J. Farmer Richard Junior Farmer passed away peacefully from this earth on March 28, 2008 as he rested at his home in Castaic. He was born Nov. 13, 1925 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. All of his schooling was in that city and he graduated from Wilson High School. There he became an accomplished athlete, lettering in both football and baseball. He was instrumental in earning championships for his teams and was selected to All Star teams in both his junior and senior years.

Former Flintridge Prep standout Ramses Barden received a nice incentive following the conclusion of his first stretch of offseason activities with the New York Giants. On Wednesday, Barden signed a four-year contract for $2.48 million with the Giants, who selected him with the 85th overall pick in the third round of the 2009 NFL Draft on April 26. As part of the contract, Barden will also net a $731,000 signing bonus. ?The New York Giants are an outstanding organization,?

With the support and sheparding of three local Episcopal churches 50 years ago, St. George?s Episcopal Church of La Cañada was formed. On July 10, 1958, the Valley Sun reported: ?For many years Episcopalians in La Cañada have hoped to have an Episcopal Church in their own community. Now this desire is materializing and a mission is being sponsored by the three neighboring Episcopal parishes of St. Lukes, La Crescenta, St. Mark?s Altadena and All Saint?s, Pasadena.? St. George will be celebrating their 50th anniversary on April 27 and the public is invited to attend the service and following reception.

As a community service, the Around Town column will occasionally supplement the Valley Sun 10-20-30 Years Ago feature with news from 19th century. For example, last week, we brought you news from 137 years ago. (“Neighborhood news from 1885,” June 13.) Perhaps in response to the largesse of the Around Town column, LCHS Class of 2013 valedictorian Matt Jones, in one of the world's greatest and most awesome commencement speeches ever, told the audience, “Let's just appreciate the now.” In that spirit, the Around Town column will move forward.

The Valley Sun on Feb. 3 reported that the La Cañada Flintridge Republican “committee” endorsed three City Council candidates (“Republicans endorse three for council” by Joe Piasecki). Al Restivo and his La Cañada Flintridge Republican Club, which is the chartered name of the group, has no authority to speak for the Republican Party regarding endorsements in nonpartisan elections where more Republicans are running than there are seats available. Five of the seven candidates for three seats are Republicans.
