Ten Years Ago A $259,000 outdoor science lab at La Cañada Elementary School was completed on budget. A 24-member steering committee led by Kathy Trueblood and Mary Pinola had spent three years planning and raising community funds for the project.   Twenty Years Ago  About 400 people turned out at St. Bede Church to pay their respects during the funeral of the well-respected longtime local florist Eiji Tomita, who died at the age of 78. He had retired in 1982, but his wife, Hannah, and their daughter, Lisa, carried on his tradition at Eiji's Florist in La Cañada.

Sport Chalet Inc., headquartered in La Cañada Flintridge, will open another store in Vacaville, about 50 miles north of San Francisco, this weekend. The new store in the Nut Tree Village Shopping Center, at 1621 E. Monte Vista Ave., will not only sell sports equipment and offer the usual services, but will also feature an on-site scuba training pool. The grand opening celebration of the company's 42nd store is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 25, through Sunday, Aug. 27. On Friday morning, members of the Vacaville City Council, Chamber of Commerce, and other guests, along with Sport Chalet General Manager Ryan Bott, will kick off the festivities with a traditional ribbon cutting ceremony.

EVENTS — Saturday, May 19 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Kiwanis Club of Glendale and the California Highway Patrol are sponsoring "Child Seat Checkup Day." Participants will have their child's car safety seat inspected to determine whether it is installed and being used properly. Individuals with unsafe car seats will have a new safety seat installed in their vehicle at no charge. The event will be held at Edison Elementary School, 435 S. Pacific Ave. Open to all L.A. County residents.

There probably aren?t many Boy Scout Troops that can claim a 50-year history in their community and probably far fewer that can say they have successfully sold manure for 28 years, and have fun doing it. Members of St. Bede?s Boy Scout Troop 507 can lay claim to both. This year, the 70 registered members of Troop 507 have kicked off their 28th Annual Garden Products Sale, which includes steer manure, planter mix, decorative bark, peat moss, potting soil and grass seed. Troop members began taking orders early last month and are continuing through Oct. 9. Scoutmaster Ron Connelly, who shares duties with Mike Devine, explained the sale saying, ?
