Hargrave, account executive and special sections manager for the Valley Sun newspapers since 2003, has been promoted to the position of advertising director, it was announced this week. In her new position, Hargrave is overseeing all aspects of the advertising department that serves both the La Cañada and Crescenta Valley Suns, including display ads and special sections. She is also creating new advertising campaigns for clients. The 34-year-old Har-grave is a native La Cañadan and a product of the local public school system.

La Cañada Unified School District is advertising an upper-level math position to begin after the holidays, La Cañada Patch reported Wednesday. It was unclear whether or not the job positing was related to Gabrielle Leko's possible dismissal from her job as a math teacher at La Canada High School. Leko is accused of addressing a student as “Jew boy,” among other offenses. As a result of a formal complaint against her, Gabrielle Leko was directed last month to undergo sensitivity and diversity training.

La Cañada resident Alex Taylor has written a new book, "Amazing Mentholatum and the Commerce of Curing the Common Cold 1889-1955," about the company his great-grandfather, A. A. Hyde, founded. The 242-page volume printed by Angeles Crest Publications is priced at $34. Book review columnist Jonathan Kirsch had this to say about the book: "By focusing on the intersection between the pharmaceutical industry and popular culture, Alex Taylor succeeds in telling one of the great tales of American civilization—the heroic effort to conquer the common cold.
