The San Gabriel Pomona Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross is hosting its 4th Annual Chinese New Year Celebration event on Saturday, March 3, at the Pacific Palms Resort, City of Industry. Proceeds raised from this event directly benefit the emergency preparedness and disaster response programs in the San Gabriel Pomona Valley, benefiting more than 1.8 million people in 45 communities. The Chinese New Year Celebration is a festive evening of gourmet Chinese food, award-winning wine and entertainment.

Glendale's Alex Theatre welcomes The National Acrobats of Taiwan, the foremost practitioners of traditional dramatic folk arts, in its third U.S. tour. This celebrated troupe, led by artistic director Lo Jih-Hung, will grace the Alex Theatre stage with an awe-inspiring blend of comedy, dance, magic, and martial prowess on Jan. 29 beginning at 8 p.m. Extraordinary family entertainment suitable for adults and children of all ages, the program features a troupe of 35 world-class master clowns and jugglers exhibiting astounding movements, endless creativity and spectacular choreography.

The “Nutcracker Ballet” is a holiday tradition and for many it is the first time they experience the ballet. It is with this in mind that the Media City Ballet’s founder and artist director Natasha Middleton casts and choreographs her production. “We are in a different day and age,” Middleton said. “Ballet needs to change [with the times].” Her company will perform “The Nutcracker” Dec. 6-7 at Glendale’s Alex Theatre.

Local youths will forward roll, donkey kick and do handstands and cartwheels Saturday as they join together with gymnasts from across Southern California for a Tumble-A-Thon to raise funds for Childrens Hospital. The event, which has a $30 registration fee and $15 for each additional sibling, in addition to individual pledge amounts, is coordinated by Little Gym of La Cañada, and will be from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. for beginning and advanced acrobats ages 4 months to 12 years. Sarah Lowe, 46, owner and president of Little Gym of La Cañada, came up with the event concept last fall and coordinated it with Little Gyms across the region.

The Learning Castle and La Cañada Preparatory will begin their 13th year in La Cañada on Sept. 9. The Learning Castle, founded in 1992 by Terry Villanueva, and La Cañada Preparatory, added in 2002, are schools that focus on each student's needs through an individualized curriculum. Low teacher-to-student ratios, coupled with curricula developed by and for the TLC and LCP style of teaching, have led to outstanding results with students learning at an accelerated pace. Classroom work is accompanied by enrichment programs that include, but are definitely not limited to art, music, Spanish, French, computer science, physical education and the performing arts.

The Alex Theatre presents its 2004-2005 season. Bale Folclorico da Bahia Run: Oct. 1 at 8 p.m. Founded in 1988, Bale Folclorico da Bahia has twice been named best dance company in Brazil. Its fame arises from the dancers' athleticism and virtuosity in traditional and contemporary dances that blend elements of West African, European (Portuguese) and Brazilian culture. The Bale Folclorico - one of two such companies - tours for 100-150 performances a year while the other stays in Salvador (the company's home base)
