With the tying run on second base and two outs away from disaster or triumph, La Canada High baseball reliever Michael Selsor came on and delivered the latter.

Selsor notched the high-pressure save on Wednesday afternoon as the Spartans defeated Ontario, 5-4, in the Gladstone Tournament championship game.

"He came on and shut the door," Spartans Coach Alex Valadez said. "He stepped up."

The Spartans improved to 8-4 in garnering the tournament title.

"It's obviously a positive," said Valadez of winning the tournament. "We're just being consistent. That's the biggest thing for us.

"We have some injuries and some guys are stepping up."

Travis Clark was named the tournament most valuable player for the Spartans.

On Wednesday, Valadez also got production from Alex Vaughn, who drove in two runs and had a triple and a run-scoring safety squeeze bunt.

Trailing, 3-1, the Spartans rallied, with Justin Lewis doing well offensively, according to Valadez, and the pitching of Ryan Hobart and Sam Geller keeping the game close.

The Spartans continue play in the Chatsworth Tournament on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at home against South Torrance before jumping back into Rio Hondo League play with a huge week featuring games against Monrovia and San Marino.
