There are a couple of things that attract most of us to La Cañada Flintridge: its exceptional schools and the desire to be a member of a tight-knit community.

We have award-winning public schools, and much sought-after private schools. One of these is Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy (FSHA). FSHA is a leader in educational excellence in our community, serving young women for 83 years. The reputation of Sacred Heart has drawn students from around the world for generations.

FSHA has presented a strategic plan to renovate its 60-year-old buildings within the existing footprint of the school’s campus. They have involved the community from the start, and quickly addressed traffic concerns. This year’s newly implemented transportation program for the students has significantly reduced the number of vehicles traveling up and down the hill. A draft environmental impact report will soon be released. I encourage you to familiarize yourself with the project at www.fsha.org/masterplan.

I was recently reminded of what an extraordinary community FSHA is. A few weeks ago my daughter, a graduate of the school, lost one of her best friends to cancer, a FSHA classmate from the class of 2006. As soon as the news had spread, school administrators, staff, teachers, alumnae, and parents came forward to comfort and support the grieving family and friends. My daughter told me that her late classmate absolutely loved her alma mater, as does my daughter. How fortunate we are to have FSHA in our town! It is truly one of the gems of our city and an institution that we all should be proud of.
