La Ca ada High girls' tennis continue strong start to 2013

GIRLS’ TENNIS

La Cañada 17, Mayfield 1: Sweeps from Sawa Keymeulen (6-0, 6-0, 6-1), Serena Zheng and Emily Swanson (6-4, 6-3, 6-4) and Suma Gudapati and Sharyse Watanabe (6-2, 6-1, 6-0) led the Spartans to a dominant victory Tuesday.

It came a day after La Cañada’s first loss of the season to Hart, 10-8, on Monday. Ally McKenzie won two sets, 6-3, 6-3, along with Swanson and Zheng, 7-5, 6-0, for the Spartans (4-1) on Monday.

La Cañada picked up a tiebreaker win at West Ranch on Friday, 9-9 (65-61), without one of its singles players. Their top two singles players and sisters Cassie and Ally McKenzie each swept their three sets with perfect 6-0 scores.

With Emily Matuska filling in for Keymeulen, La Cañada picked up two more wins in singles and one more in doubles to set up a tiebreaker Friday.

BOYS’ WATER POLO

Flintridge Prep in Segerstrom Invitational: The Rebels picked up their first two wins in tournament action Friday and took fourth in the tournament with two losses Saturday at Segerstrom Fundamental High.

Flintridge Prep (2-5) fell in overtime of the third-place game to the Loyola junior-varsity squad, 9-8. Ethan Vandeventer continued his strong play with three goals and four steals for the Rebels, who received three more goals, four steals and four drawn ejections from John Treinen. In the loss, Alex Hirsch-Marin had nine saves in the cage.

After winning both games Friday, Flintridge Prep played Woodbridge tough in the first half and found itself trailing, 5-4, at the break. Woodbridge pulled away in the final 14 minutes for a 16-7 win. Vandeventer finished with four goals and Diego Delgado had six steals and three assists. Hirsch-Marin had nine blocks in the cage.

Prep’s first win came against La Quinta, 14-4, and was provided by a three-goal, two-assist performance from Vandeventer. Four other Flintridge Prep players had a pair of goals in the win, while Delgado added five steals and Greg Walsh finished with five saves.

Flintridge Prep then knocked off San Juan Hills, 16-7. Delgado and Treinen led the offense with five and four goals, respectively, and Delgado chipped in four assists. Vandeventer and Alex Blaine each nabbed five steals. Hirsch-Marin recorded seven saves.

BOYS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

La Cañada, St. Francis at Fastback Shootout: The Golden Knights sent runners into all four grade-level races Saturday at Mt. San Antonio College.
