District change doesn't have a chance

Nice try, parents in western La Cañada Flintridge. But your proposal to bring the last segment of local students into the La Cañada school district will not succeed ("Parents call for district change," June 6).

The issue is money. The Glendale school district, which instructs the La Cañada students at Mountain Avenue Elementary, Rosemont Middle School and Crescenta Valley High, receives state funding for every student in class. They call it ADA, for average daily attendance. And Glendale will not give up those approximate 250 students through transfer for the sake of the ADA money.

Yes, the proposal for uniting all LCF students into their own school district certainly makes sense, but the current system with Glendale has been in effect for many years and is very difficult to crack. The transfer has to have the approval of the Glendale school district.

There was a concerted and similar effort several years ago and all the LCF arguments for the transfer were good ones but they couldn't cope with the main issue, money.
