La Cañada woman who finished Boston Marathon: 'I'm really thankful'

After Maryann Boosalis, a 26-year-old from La Cañada Flintridge, completed the Boston Marathon on Monday, she walked to her hotel room to relax with her mother.

She completed the 26.2-mile race in three hours and 24 minutes, roughly 45 minutes before the first of two explosion hit near the Boylston Street finish line. Boosalis said she didn’t hear anything.

“I had no idea that anything happened until I saw the breaking news on TV,” she said. “It’s scary and sad at the same time.”

[UPDATED 7:30 p.m. As of Monday evening, at least three people were reported dead and more than 130 others were injured, according to the Los Angeles Times.]

Boosalis participated in the Los Angeles Marathon last year; This was her second marathon. She said it was a “big deal” because the Boston race is known as one of the biggest in the world. Participants must qualify to run.

She’s happy that was she escaped the explosions, which occurred blocks away from her hotel.

“I’m really thankful,” she said. “None of my friends I know running were affected. It’s just really sad [for those who were injured.]”

There were three other people from La Cañada Flintridge who were registered in the Boston Marathon. Eamon Doyle, 25, finished the race in about three hours and 14 minutes, according to marathon data. Aaron Wade completed the race in just over three hours, while James Morehart, 53, completed the race in just under four hours.
